Norene Madsen Yates

Long time Alaska resident Norene Madsen Yates, 93, died November 20, 2021, at her home in Anchorage, surrounded by loving family members. A service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Strawberry chapel, located at 3250 Strawberry Rd, Anchorage at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 4th, 2021. Arrangements have been entrusted to Legacy Funeral Homes. Mrs. Yates was born May 19, 1928, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Her family eventually moved to Blackfoot Idaho where she graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1946 and Business College in Utah in 1948. She married LCDR Vern M. Yates on August 19, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had five children and lived the Navy pilot’s life, moving all over the United States until 1967, when Vern retired from the Navy. The family eventually moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1969, where they have lived since. Mrs. Yates was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her entire life. She especially loved working with the youth. She also worked various jobs to support her family, the last being the investment department of National Bank of Alaska during the early 1970’s. She then assisted her husband, Vern, in his career as a salesman for Bowman Distribution in Alaska from 1973 until 2006 when they both retired. She loved their life in Alaska, and they owned a share in a remote fishing lodge for 40 years. She received her private pilot’s license and they owned and flew two planes. They even had a commercial set-net fishing site off the Kvichak for a couple years. She is survived by her husband, Vern, and their 5 children. Daughter Karen Kalt of Anchorage; daughter Kathy Ulmer and her husband, Reed, of Port Ludlow, WA; son Gary of Longview WA; son Doug and his wife Linda, of Darien, GA; and son Steve of Anchorage; and 25 grandchildren and 38+ great grandchildren. Norene loved and was loved in return by many. She had a kind, gracious, and giving spirit. She was an example to all those who were fortunate to be part of her life. Above all, she cherished her testimony of God and the gift of family and friends in this world.
