Bernard Heughes Shaw "Barney"

Surrounded by his family, Bernard Heughes Shaw, known affectionately as “Barney,” died today leaving behind his wife, Gwyneth “Dinny” Shaw; his sons, David, Michael(Julie) and Matthew(Chloe); his grandchildren, Cook, Lea, Kailyn, Jackson and Rae; his siblings, Robert (Margo) Shaw, William (Lucia) Shaw, Julie (John) Cleland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Barney was predeceased by his parents, Donald B Shaw and Sally Heughes Shaw, his brother Donald B “Buddy” Shaw Jr. and sister-in-law Margo Shaw. Barney was born in Rochester, NY on February 16, 1941. He graduated from the Allendale School, Williams College, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He worked at Ernst & Ernst as a CPA for 6 yrs before joining the family structural steel business, F.L. Heughes & Co. Inc. with his grandfather, father and brother. Together, they shaped the Rochester skyline. Barney married his high school sweetheart Dinny in 1962, and they have been inseparable ever since. Together they raised their three sons and were happily married for 59 years. He devoted his entire life to family, friends and community, and his biggest joy was laughing with his five grandchildren. He spent some of his happiest early years as a camper and then counselor at Camp Pathfinder in Algonquin Park, and later with family at “The Farley Farm” in Pennsylvania and their cottage on Keuka Lake - heaven on earth. He was a firm believer in giving back to his community and volunteered countless hours with the Rochester Rotary Club and its Sunshine Camp. Barney was also a soccer coach, starting a team at the Baden Street Settlement. He was a member of the Country Club of Rochester and the Williams Alumni Club. Barney was best known for his wonderful smile, his kind and generous demeanor and his love of being with others. The world is a better place because of him, and he will be deeply missed by all. Due to Covid-19, a private family service will be held. Please offer condolences, memories and messages on Barney’s webpage at www.anthonychapels.com. The family wishes to hear from you. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lollypop Farm Humane Society of Greater Rochester, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY 14450, or the Friendly Home, Lee Place Wing staff, who cared for both Barney and his family in his final days.
