Patricia L Calkins Obituary

Patricia Lucile Painton, was born in Elmira, NY on August 27, 1929 to Norman S. Painton and Frances Lucile Everitt Painton. She attended Elmira College and Pratt Institute of Design in New York City. In 1952, she married John Thiers Calkins who became the office manager for several congressmen from New York state before heading the National Republican Congressional Committee in the early 1970s and working in the Gerald Ford White House. Patricia managed their household and gave birth to two daughters who survive her, Sharon Calkins Hubley (of Washington, DC) and Carolyn Leigh Calkins (of Chevy Chase, MD). After her divorce, Patricia completed her college degree education at Mount Vernon College (now part of George Washington University) in 1987 and continued with her previous work at All Saints Church of Chevy Chase Thrift Shop and her volunteer roles at All Saints Church Altar Guild, the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, and The Daughters of the American Revolution. A lifelong lover of reading, Patricia enjoyed history, biographies, mystery novels (particularly Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie Poirot and Marple books) The classical music radio station was the backdrop of all of her daily activities as she found it very uplifting and allowed concentration on other things. She was also an amateur painter who had a special talent for copying Renoir and Monet artworks. She enjoyed nothing more than visiting Hillwood Museum in Washington, D.C., The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and The Courtauld Gallery in London. Another of Patricia's passions was attending theatrical and ballet events in New York, London, or at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in D.C. In addition to her two daughters, survivors include son-in-law Peter A. Hubley (of Washington, DC), grandchildren Cameron J. Hubley and Caroline L. Hubley (also of Washington, DC), brother George Painton and sister-in-law Linda M. Painton (both of Altamonte Springs,FL), and their children. Throughout her entire life, Patricia shared love and affection with family dogs, cats, and other pets and was a regular contributor to several animal welfare advocacy organizations such as Human Rescue Alliance in D.C. and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to either of the above mentioned charities or a charity of your choice. The inurnment of her ashes will be held on April 22 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Church of Chevy Chase Columbarium.
