Delmer Funk, beloved husband of Irene Burwash Funk of Roblin MB, passed away on November 24th 2021 at the age of 96.

Delmer was born March 29th, 1925 in Northcliff MB to Jacob and Elizabeth (Hiebert) Funk. In May of that year, they travelled by train to the homestead in the Happy Lake area, along with Elizabeth’s parents and many of her siblings.

The small community soon sprang to life with a school and a church built by the New Church of Jerusalem Community. Delmer was an avid member of the community and would tell stories of his days as a boy working along side the men as they built the church, and homesteaded the land.

Delmer could only talk German as a young boy, and slowly began to learn English as he entered the school at Happy Lake. He worked along side his dad Jake from a little boy to a grown man always talking German and had a very strong bond to his dad.

Delmer’s love for horses was very evident as he always owned horses to work or play. Always had his favourites and grew up with horses as most boys and young men of the era.

Delmer had many jobs over the years. He worked on the docks in Churchill MB, Diamond Driller in Thompson MB, School District Bus driver and always farming.

In 1947, Delmer married the love if his life Irene Burwash in Flin Flon MB. They eventually moved back to Happy Lake where they began farming as the took over the family farm when his dad Jake passed away.

They began their life in the area, raising their family and became a permanent and vital part of the community. Delmer was sociable character and would always greet you with a great sense of humour and in some kind of teasing manner. He was well known to all the neighbours as a person you could call if you needed help or if something needed repaired.

Delmer leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 74 years Irene (Burwash) Funk. Their children: Shirley Joe) Carriere, daughter-in-law Gisele (Carriere) Funk, Robert (Yvonne) Funk, Marsha (Ken) Perchaluk, Doreen Funk, Doug (Tara) Funk, 13 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren and one on the way.

He is preceded by his son Walter who passed in 2006.

Delmer will always be remembered for his love of cards, his teasing and joking sense of humour, his love for family and his great stories of days gone by.
