George E. & Margaret G. Herbig Obituary

George E. Herbig, 82, and Margaret Green Herbig, 76, of Louisville passed away tragically on Saturday, November 20, 2021, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Both native Louisvillians, they were joined in marriage on September 11, 1965, and together built a life based on faith, love, and family. George was a 1957 graduate of St. Xavier High School and a 1962 graduate of UofL Speed School. Margaret was 1963 graduate of Ursuline Academy. George was a civil engineer who worked for the Army Corp of Engineers until he retired in 2003. Margaret worked as inside sales for ATI Technologies which sold industrial tools for over 45 years. They were both avid sports fans, they loved UK sports, the Reds, the Yankees, and whatever sport their grandchildren played. George was a number’s guy, who enjoyed bowling and golf, but his real passion was growing tomatoes and sharing them with friends and neighbors. He was a member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. He was also a member of St. Al’s Aces and St. Xavier Alumni Association. Margaret came from a family of 13 children. She was all about her family, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She not only loved her own grandchildren, but she had many others she considered her own. Margaret was a member of the “Thursday Night Nails Group” with her girlfriends. George and Margaret are survived by their children, Alicia Miiller (Damon), Cynthia Herbig, and George E. Herbig II; grandchildren, Nick and Maddie Latino and Sophie and Samuel Herbig. George is also survived by a sister, Colleen Magruder. Margaret is also survived by her siblings, Joan Hans, Rita Rudolph (Karlton), Debbie Clark (Adrian) and Patricia Green. George is preceded in death by his parents, Henry “Dee Dee” and Alice Marie Herbig. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents Vurnel and Dorothy Ballard Green; and siblings, Joyce Welch, Betty Weiter, Cathy Krebs, Dorothy, James, Chuck, Mike and Camille Green. A joint Funeral Mass will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2021, at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 1395 Girard Drive. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021, at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, St. Matthews. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Parklands of Floyds Park.
