Obituary
Leonila Alejandrina Figueras Figueroa Cunningham was born September 11, 1926 in Santurce Puerto Rico. She was the oldest of six children born from the union of the late Francisco Figueras and Estabania Figueroa Figueras. After graduating high school in 1945 her parents sent her to the main land to attend Leland College in Baker, Louisiana, where she met and married Kelso Cunningham in 1946. This union was blessed with three children Francisco Gabriel, Carmen Leonor and Wilfredo Lorenzo, In 1972 she graduated from Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She also earned a Masters degree. After completing her education she went on to work as a nutritionist with the Head Start Program in Opelousas, Louisiana. In 1977 she moved to Los Angeles where she became a translator for the Los Angeles Independent School District until Osteoarthritis forced her into retirement. Then in 2003 she moved to Port Arthur, Texas until the passing of her daughter Carmen in 2011. She moved to Marrero, Louisiana, to be close to her youngest son Wilfredo Lorenzo. She leaves to mourn her two sons, Francisco Cunningham, Baton Rouge, LA and Wilfredo Cunningham (Terrilyn) Harvey, LA, grandchildren Francesca Gauff (Lucien) Laplace, LA, Shannon Godfrey, Spring, TX, Andrienne Calcote (Gary), Red Oak, TX, Wesley Godfrey, Magnolia, TX, great-grandchildren, Bianca and Alexis Godfrey, Tyson Thomas, Garrison Calcote, Mia and Nixon Godfrey, sister Evelyn Figueroa Figueras, son-in law Artie Godfrey and a host of nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Celebration of Life service on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Professional Funeral Services, 1449 N. Claiborne Ave., NOLA, at 4:00PM. Visitation will be held from 3:00PM until time of service. Interment private.
