Dick Weaver

Richard A. "Dick" Weaver, 89, New Smyrna Beach, passed away on November 23, 2021, surrounded by his wife and loving family. He married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis, in 1952 and they lived in New York before moving to Florida in 1962. Dick was employed at the Cape for many years as a communications controller and worked on the Apollo missions. Dick was involved in various businesses locally including Weaver’s Bargain Barn, Wright & Ford Millworks, “Arnold’s” gas station, the development of Shady Acres and Corbin Park Communities, as well as Weaver’s shell mining operation which would eventually develop into Lake Waterford Estates, one of Dick’s finest accomplishments. In addition, Dick was very active in the community. He was instrumental in the early days of organized sports for local children. He founded and was the first president of the Southeast Volusia Athletic Association. Dick, along with a local businessman and a lawyer friend were responsible for the development of the NSB Sports Complex. Dick continued to work, buy & sell real estate, and farm until the very end. In the last 10 years, he was an avid gardener, planting fruit trees and many vegetables. Dick also became a published author in 2020. He was a co-author of a novel titled, “A Dream That Needs To Be Told”. He is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 69 years, and their 7 children, Cathy Ledger, Alan (Patti), Wendy (Sam) Mahaffey, David (Lisa), Phillip (Cyndi), Gary and Bobby (Shelly), 15 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many extended family members. Dick always introduced himself as Father Weaver, as his family was his most prized accomplishment. A family friend recently described him as “A man that will be sorely missed as a friend to our community, a supporter of our youth and someone devoted to family.” A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
