Robert (Bob) Palmer
<p>It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our loving husband, father and grandfather. Bob left us peacefully on November 18th while holding hands with Gwen, his devoted wife of almost 70 years.</p> <p>Robert Johnstone Palmer was born on January 13, 1927 at Mrs. Jolly’s Nursing home in Swan River, Manitoba. He attended school at Pretty Valley, then Kenville Highschool. As a young teen he began assisting his dad on the farm in Pretty Valley, where he developed his love for the land, enjoying all the beauty and rewards it had to offer. In 1949, he met the love of his life, Gwendoline Thera. Gwen was teaching in a nearby school district and the two became smitten. They got married on July 14, 1952 at the St. James Anglican Church in Swan River. In time, four much loved children joined them – Brian, Charlene, Leanne and Jacqueline. Bob always said his two greatest loves were his family and the farm, he was passionate about both.</p> <p>Bob worked tirelessly at clearing acre after acre with his son Brian, eventually purchasing additional land and growing his farming business. After a long and rewarding career, the Palmer family farm was sold in 2016. He loved to talk about the farm, sharing his experiences, but also enjoyed listening and learning from others. Although “farmers never retire”, Bob and Gwen moved to Swan River and started their retirement. This meant more time to enjoy his favourite things – socializing with friends, sharing stories over many a cocktail, spending time in their camper at Wellman Lake and fishing at various lakes. Bob always enjoyed long drives in the country to watch the farmers harvesting, and seeing the beautiful fall colours and the geese land in the fields. These were some of his favourite ways to spend an afternoon. Bob loved to reminisce of the many places that he and Gwen were blessed to visit over the years - Texas, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii and New Orleans to name a few. The highlight and their favourite adventure being a road trip to Alaska. Both Bob and Gwen treasured their many visits to British Columbia where they would make their annual trek to visit their family.</p> <p>Bob is survived and loved forever by his wife Gwen and their three children – Charlene (Martin) Enright, Leanne (Randy Kootte) Palmer, Jackie (Alan) Klein. Daughter-in-law Jewel Palmer, sister Margaret Cox, five grandchildren – Chelsey Palmer, Matthew Enright, Danielle Enright, Jayson Klein and Jada Klein, as well as 18 nieces and nephews.</p> <p>Bob was pre-deceased by his son and best friend Brian Palmer, sister Barbara Thexton, mother Sadie Palmer, father John (Jack) Palmer, and brothers-in-law John Thexton and Frank Cox.</p> <p>Although his loss is heartbreaking, we find peace knowing dad lived a full, happy and joyous life. He is reunited with his son Brian and this gives his family comfort. A celebration of his beautiful life will take place at a later date.
