Melvin Eugene Sowards Obituary

Melvin Eugene Sowards, 88, of Greenwich, went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 18, 2021. Born on May 8, 1933 in Hurricane, WV, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Ellen (nee Wilcox) Sowards. Melvin lived most of his life in the New London/North Fairfield/Greenwich area. 

Melvin worked as a tool and die maker with Akron Standard until they closed and he retired. He was a hard worker and could fix nearly anything. Melvin enjoyed working on cars and lawn tractors as well as tackling big jobs around the house like plumbing and electric. He also enjoyed giving his time to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Melvin and Jane were married on September 10, 1954 in Angola, IN. They shared many wonderful years together and enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Jane (nee Griffin) Sowards; daughters, Lynne Ray of North Fairfield, and Sheryl Dupee of Willard; grandchildren Jennifer (Robert) Rivers, Jason Keinath, Jacquelyn Uselton, and John (Tracey) Ray; great-grandchildren Kristopher, Faith, Joshua, Meghan, Tristan, Hailey, Alexis, Lauren, Owen, Gunner, and Gianna; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Barbara.  Melvin was preceded in death by his son-in-law, William Ray Sr. and seven siblings. 

A private graveside service will take place at Grove Street Cemetery, New London, at a later date. Donations in Melvin's memory may be directed to either The Ripley Church, 4130 Edwards Road, Greenwich, 44837, or to the Shiloh Pentecostal Church of God, 117 Baseline Rd, Greenwich, 44837.
