John Guy Carlson Obituary

In Loving Memory
John Guy Carlson
April 6, 1942 to October 27, 2021
John Carlson will be remembered as a faithful follower of Jesus, a loving husband, a caring father, a witty uncle, and a friend to the many lives he touched. As a young man, he proudly and heroically served his country in the United States Air Force from April 18, 1960 to April 17, 1964. While stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, he made sure to come home to Bakersfield on weekends, when possible, to attend the First Church of the Nazarene, where his mother and family attended as well as his soon to be wife Lillian Overholt. After only six months, he married his true love, Lillian on May 23, 1964. On September 24, 1965 their first child, Kamala Ann was born. Twelve years later, the family welcomed the birth of their second daughter, Shakira Lee on May 3, 1977. Finally, on November 14, 1990 the family was complete with the birth of Ariella Helen. John’s career began as a meat-cutter at Thriftymart. Then, in 1972, he decided to change trajectory by joining his father Lee Roy’s business, Carlson’s Vacuum and Sewing Center, which was first started by John’s grandfather, Henry in 1910 who immigrated from Sweden. After a long life of commitment to his country, devotion to his family, and service to his community, John retired in 2016, and enjoyed spending more time with his wife, daughters,
son-in-law Clay, and grandchildren Zaviera, Zuriel, and Zimrian McCombs.
