"Scotty" Obituary

Scott (“Scotty”) Wood Delius Zimmerman, 81, died Wednesday, November 17, 2021. Born in Kingsport, Tennessee on May 4, 1940 – on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you!) – Scott had many passions, including a love of family, theatre, travel, genealogy, faith and the Girl Scouts. She attended Emory & Henry College in southwestern Virginia, earning her BA in Biology in 1962. She made many close friends there, the closest of whom dubbed themselves “the Troops.” In the fall of 1959, while driving her Morris Minor, she picked up a fellow student (who her friend Patsy Neuman vouched for) hitch hiking a ride into town to do his laundry. A date at the sorority formal and collecting specimens for biology lab followed and then, 3 years later, she and that hitchhiker – Dan Zimmerman – got married in Abingdon. Thus, began a 58-year adventure that took them first to the University of Florida in Gainesville, where Dan pursued his Ph.D., becoming Dr. Dan, while Scott taught biology and coached girls high school basketball. While getting her PHT (putting hubby through) degree, she was a lab tech and took graduate courses. Dr. Dan and Scott then moved to Bethesda, Maryland, where they worked and raised their three children. Scott’s faith journey was a very important part of her life and she was a long-time parishioner at St. James, where she was also part of the St. James Ringers adult bell choir, President of St. James women, one of the first-ever female vestry members and on Altar Guild for over 30 years. Her faith was also part of her work as a bookkeeper at both St. James and Chevy Chase United Methodist. That faith was tested when she suffered a stroke at age of 51. While it closed some doors, ending her involvement in the bell choir and leaving her unable to drive, it opened others. It especially seemed to stoke the energy she devoted to helping others on their post-stroke journeys, traveling, attending live theater performances and reading as a long-time officer of the Montgomery County Stroke Association. Scott was tirelessly there, whether “there” was the Kennedy Center, Folger Shakespeare Theatre, Arena Stage, Olney, Signature and other local community theatres. The same was true with seeing the world. Scott’s and Dan’s travels took them to the Great Wall of China, Cuba, Machu Picchu, Cuba and all over Europe and the United States. They loved the bi-annual Germany trips for Delius Family reunions (better known as Familientag), Girl Scouts Roundups alumni trips and her final trip to a farm in New York owned by longtime friends. She also enjoyed to the annual MTAV (More than a Vacation) alumni trips and Homecomings to Emory and Henry. Sure, there were a few destinations unvisited and plays (and revivals) unseen, but not many! As a grandmother, she loved to “twin-sit” for grandsons Joe and Dan. From the early days, she would offer another set of arms and then accompany Emily to parks, rides on the Cabin John train, strawberry picking and puppet shows. She especially loved their trips to Beaufort, NC for summer science camp and other adventures with Grandma. Scott is survived by her beloved husband and soulmate Dan, her three children Andy Zimmerman, Malissa Zimmerman (Andy Shulman) and Emily Germano (Joe) and her grandchildren Daniel and Joseph. Donations to honor Scott may be made to Emory and Henry’s Zimmerman / Delius Scholarship Fund (https://www.ehc.edu/giving/give-online/) or to the Montgomery County Stroke Association ( https://www.stroke.org/en/stroke-groups/Montgomery-county-stroke-association—bethesda-chapter).
