MALCHUK: Harry. September 9, 1935 to November 15, 2021.

Harry Malchuk: entrepreneur, outdoors man, life of the party and unique personality. He squeezed every moment out of his 86 years life experience.

Harry took his Shoal Lake farm roots and turned his hard work into building the town of Brandon into a city, with many successful endeavors: barber and salon owner, home builder, landscaper, apartment builder and owner, managing several multi-level marketing systems (mostly health and wellness). But will be most remembered for Harry’s Ukrainian Kitchen on Brandon’s Trans Canada highway frontage where he and his wife Birdeen, shared the love of his heritage cuisine and their endearing hospitality. His innovation and philosophy of “keep your ears open to opportunities” inspired others to do whatever they wanted to do.

Harry found community with nature, where his love of the outdoors and wilderness included muskrat and beaver trapping, fishing, and hunting: duck, geese, deer, moose, elk (encasing his own recipe of sausages). His homes reflected the comfort he found in nature through lake cottages, log homes and even a hunting hut only accessible by snowmobile. Speaking of snowmobiles, Harry was at the forefront of the Manitoba snowmobile scene as one of the first to race, sponsored by Sno Jet and then Polaris. Being highly competitive and winning several trophies. One winter snowstorm closed all the roads in the city and Harry rigged up his snowmobile as an ambulance and to transport Nurses to the Brandon General hospital for work duties.

Harry’s zest for life and unending energy fed his attitude of “If you work hard – you can play hard.” With many people to call his friends and a house full of family – brothers, sisters and their families celebrating the many holidays, Harry’s life was filled with joy. One of his favorite pastimes was hockey, where he supported his son Kevin to the end of his junior hockey career and could be seen regularly as a season ticket holder for over 40 years, in the stands at Wheat Kings games, leading the fans in bold hearted cheers.

Harry led and did by example. He was hands on, digging in the dirt beside you. His attention to detail inspired a high level of presentation. He only expected from another what he knew he could do himself. He inspired courage to be yourself and perseverance to realize your dreams. He lived a very full and remarkable life, with experiences too numerous to document here.

Harry is leaving a big hole in the hearts of his family: wife, Birdeen; children: Tim (Michelle), Donna, Kevin, Darcy (Sandra), Tammy (Michael), Kim, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Fred Malchuk of Coquitlam, British Columbia and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 8th Street, on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. In compliance with Public Health Orders, proof of full vaccination will be required to attend.

Thank you to the staff of Brandon General Hospital, Winnipeg Health Science Centre and Assiniboine Centre, for Harry’s stroke care and making his last days comfortable.
