Leonard Ray McPeters Obituary

September 24, 1943 - November 15, 2021

Mr. Leonard Ray McPeters, 78 of Grant, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday evening, November 15th, 2021. Leonard was born into the family of Oliver and Lily McPeters on September 24, 1943. As a child, he spent much of his life in Madison County. He attended New Hope School and volunteered for the draft in 1962.

On June 16, 1967, he married Eddie Elizabeth Saint at Eddie’s Uncle Dick and Aunt Patsy Hunters house. After honeymooning in Mobile, Alabama, they started their life journey living in New Hope for 12 years. Prior to marrying Eddie Elizabeth, Saint, his sister-in-law’s, Paula Saint and Teresa Saint served as their chaperones while dating. Leonard was a private first class and stationed in Panama Canal and was later released from the Army in 1964. Later, he joined the Navy CB(s) in 1977 to 1979. During this time he worked at UPS and later went to work at Redstone Arsenal in 1977. After serving, he worked as a lineman for the Huntsville Utilities. In 1979, he purchased his dream farm in Grant, Alabama. They had horses, cows and a chicken farm business for 9 years. In 1980, he and Eddie were blessed with a handsome little boy they named Steadman. On December 31, 2010, he obtained the daughter he never had, Mindy McPeters. She was a joy to him and he spoke of her often. Many times Leonard would joke of how he would give Mindy more money for Birthdays and Christmas than Steadman. Mindy loved every minute of that. In of March 2013, his pride and joy grandson, Charlee was born. In 2008, he retired as a Construction Inspector for the Redstone Arsenal. During retirement, he and Eddie took many vacations to the Smoky Mountains and lots of day trips enjoying the beautiful scenery and eating at many Cracker Barrels. Leonard enjoyed spending time riding his grandson on the tractor, golfing, and drinking coffee while chatting with friends at the local Waffle House or town café and driving his GMC truck. He also loved smoking cigarettes, dipping Skoal chewing tobacco and watching all sports on TV.

Leonard was a die-hard Alabama fan in which he names his only son, “Steadman” after the 1978-79 Alabama football quarterback, “Steadman Shealy.” Growing up, Leonard did not have the encouragement and opportunity to finish high school or attend college. Therefore, it was his dream for his son, Steadman to achieve an education so that he could provide for his future family. Steadman did just that. He obtained an Associate Degree in Nursing, Bachelors of Science in Nursing, Masters of Science in Nursing as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and his Doctorate of Nursing Practice at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Leonard attended every graduation his son had with pride and fulfillment of his wish for Steadman. He loved to tell people that he came into contact with about his wife, “Mrs. Eddie,” “Steadman,” “Mindy” and “Charlee.” Just prior to his death, he said that he lived for Eddie, Charlee, Steadman and Mindy.

For almost 21 years, he was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. With this diagnosis he continued to work, retired and enjoyed life until he got severely sick over the past three years. His ultimate wish was to be at home and cared for by his wife. With the mercy and strength of God, his wish came true. Leonard will always be remembered in our hearts and minds.

He was preceded in death by parents, Oliver and Lily Ashburn McPeters; brothers, Franklin McPeters, Carlos McPeters, Henry Earl McPeters; brother-in-law, Harold Gene Clark; sister, Shirley McPeters Largen; sisters-in-law, Edna McPeters and Teresa Saint; father-in-law, Eddie Lee Saint; mother-in-law, Charlie Mae Saint.
