Alice M. Kernan Obituary

Alice M. (Andrews) Kernan, age 88, of Carnegie, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, surrounded by her family.  Beloved wife of William L. Kernan.  Loving mother of Timothy S. (Mary E.) Kernan and Glenn P. Kernan; cherished grandmother of Meghan Kernan; sister of John Andrews, the late Francis W. Andrews, Marie DeSalle, Rosemary Barrus and Joseph Andrews. Alice was known for her outgoing (some would say “feisty”) personality, gregariousness and interest in others and their lives. She made everyone she met feel as though they were the most important person in the world with her gift of listening. Coupled with a bit of the Irish “blarney”, she rarely met a person with whom she couldn’t find something to talk about. Born and raised in the Sheraden area, she attended Langley High School from which she graduated in 1951. From there she pursued a career with Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania until 1966 when she and her husband Bill had their first child Tim, followed three years later by their son Glenn. From then forward she remained a stay-at-home mom with occasional temporary ventures back into the business world.  An avid fan of crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and just about anything else involving words Alice regularly completed the Post-Gazette daily crossword puzzles and assorted other puzzle books.  She prided herself on once completing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in one sitting. In recognition of this passion, on her 80th birthday her family presented her with a custom specialty birthday cake in the shape of a crossword puzzle, radio and coffee mug, the latter two representing her other lifelong passions: talk-radio and coffee.  She feared flying but with her family’s urging (and rumor has it an adult beverage or two), in 2006 Alice completed one of her major life goals by traveling to Ireland on a family vacation and kissing the Blarney Stone.  It was also on that vacation that she collected a “piece of the old sod” in the form of a small rock, which she carried in her favorite jacket pocket to this very day.  She will be missed dearly.  Relatives and friends received Friday 1-3 & 6-8 PM at SCHEPNER-McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 65 Noble Avenue, Crafton.  Funeral prayer Saturday 9 AM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Raphael the Archangel Parish – St Margaret of Scotland Church at 10 AM.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 116 Browns Hill Road, Suite 100, Valencia, PA 16059 or The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 862, Pittsburgh, PA 15106 (www.cancer.org).
