On November 11, 2021, Anchorage resident Otto S. Hanson, age 87, called it good. He tied his last fly, reloaded his last shell, caught his last fish, completed his last hunting trip, planted his last garden, watched his last Mariner’s game and told his last story. Otto grew up in Marysville, Washington, where he met his wife Carloyn Wells and they were married in October 1956. They had three boys, who Carolyn claimed were created because there was a gap between fall hunting season and winter steelhead fishing. By the time they were married, Otto had started his career with Chevron, and when he was offered a transfer to Alaska in the Spring of 1965, he accepted and moved north with his family and thereafter remained in the State he loved. He continued to work for Chevron until his retirement in 1992. In 1982, the family built a cabin on the banks of Deep Creek in Ninilchik. Upon Otto’s retirement, he and Carolyn spent the majority of their time at the cabin enjoying time with family and friends. The cabin provided Otto ample opportunity to hunt and fish and an endless supply of projects. After retirement, Otto and Carolyn spent the three winter months in Arizona enjoying fellow travelers they met in the motorhome parks, and friends that joined them to watch Seattle Mariner Spring training baseball. Otto continued this tradition after Carolyn’s passing in 2002 until the Spring of 2021. Honoring Otto’s wishes, there will not be a service, but he encourages any one who passes through Ninilchik to stop by the cabin in the summer and share a story with his family. Otto will be cremated and his ashes spread at Deep Creek. Otto is survived by his three sons, Steve, David and Mike, daughter-in-law Lisa, and three grandchildren, Ryan (Julie), Marissa, and Hayden.
