Alex A. Haman Obituary

Alex A. Haman, 82, passed away in Fairbanks on October 16th, 2021. He was born September 21st, 1939 in Berwick, North Dakota to Anton and Elizabeth Haman. He was the oldest of 5 children.

Alex grew up on a family farm in Rugby, N.D. He attended Rugby High School, where he played football. After high school, he enlisted in the Army, completing basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado.

After his service, Alex and his friend Henry Dosch came to Alaska in the spring of ’62 to work the summer at Usibelli Coal Mine in Healy. He went back to North Dakota that fall, knowing that he would make Alaska his home.

After returning to Rugby, Alex married the love of his life, Janice Buckmeier, on December 27th, 1962. Their honeymoon consisted of driving to Alaska to start their almost 59 years of marriage together. Alaska remained their home, and he couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

In 1968, they were blessed with twin boys Kirk and Ken, followed by their daughter Kim in 1973. Alex worked very hard to provide his family with a wonderful life. Many years were spent “chasing hockey pucks”, as all three children played hockey into adulthood. Some of his fondest memories were made going on hockey trips with his kids all over the world, from Boston to Russia and many places in between.

Alex was involved in many business ventures in Fairbanks. These included an excavation company, a car dealership, real estate, apartment buildings, a photo lab, and a hotel. He was always blessed with having a great sense of where and how to invest his time and money.

Alex enjoyed many of the recreational activities that Alaska has to offer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, rafting, and just going for drives to enjoy beautiful state. For years, Alex and Janice would spend many summer weeks in Homer with their good friends Clark and Barbara Springer chasing halibut and making memories. Of all the places in Alaska that they visited and explored, his absolute favorite was “the most beautiful spot in the world”, his cabin property on the Delta Clearwater River. He loved taking family and friends there to share the beauty.

In later years, Alex and Janice enjoyed “snow birding”, spending their winters in Yuma, AZ. They made many friends there, and enjoyed entertaining friends and family visitors.

Alex was blessed with five grandchildren, and would take any opportunity given to brag about them. He was so proud of them all. Spending time with his grandchildren always made his day, and put a smile on his face.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Janice; his brothers, John and Julius (Arlene); sisters Verena (Fritz) Wolf, and Linda (Robert) Spallinger; children, Kirk (Crissy), Ken and Kim; grandchildren, Hunter, Alexis, Jamie, Colton, and Christopher.

A small, private funeral will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on November 19th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Schools of Fairbanks, 615 Monroe St. Fairbanks, AK 99701
