Jere Gunn, 90, of Hattiesburg, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Asbury Hospice House. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Bay Street Presbyterian Church with interment to follow at Roseland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Mr. Gunn was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on December 12, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs. R B Gunn Jr. He graduated from Meridian High School and attended Mississippi Southern College. He served in the U S Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He started his career working for Southern Pipe and Supply Company in Meridian. In 1963 he and his family moved to Hattiesburg, MS, when he became a partner in Dye, Tucker & Gunn Plumbing Company. In 1973 the company became Dye & Gunn Plumbing and continued to provide mechanical contracting services in the Hattiesburg area, including Reed Green Coliseum, Elam Arms, Polymer Science Building and The Payne Center along with several projects at Camp Shelby and various medical facilities. Mr. Gunn served on the Plumbing Board for the City of Hattiesburg for many years. He was an active member of Bay Street Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday School Superintendent. While serving as an elder, he and the other session members through prayerful consideration, formed the Bay Street Presbyterian Day School in 1976. The school later moved to west Hattiesburg and became known as Presbyterian Christian School. Mr. Gunn was a founding member of the PCS School Board and served on that board in various capacities for 40 years. He provided oversight to many of the school’s building projects over the years. The Gunn Scholars, a program recognizing academic excellence, was established by the school in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Gunn. Mr. Gunn was an avid quail and pheasant hunter for many years. He raised English pointers and Brittany Spaniels. He enjoyed hunting all over south Mississippi, as well as in Texas and North and South Dakota. He and his dogs successfully competed in Field Trials all over South Mississippi. Mr. Gunn was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Delores “Tillie” B. Gunn; his parents, R. B Gunn, Jr and Elizabeth Suttle Gunn of Laurel, MS; his brothers, William L Mason of Charleston, SC and R. B. Gunn, III of Picayune, MS and his sister, Elizabeth G Nobles of Loveland, CO. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa “Lisa” G Smith and husband Mike Smith; three grandsons, J. Michael Smith (Anissa), Jason Smith (Megan), and Andrew Smith. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Gunner Smith, Madalyn Smith, John Terrell Smith, Jackson Smith, Tillie Grace Smith, Shaun Burt (Erin), Ethan Burt and Anna Marie Burt, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in memory of Jere Gunn to Presbyterian Christian School.
