Peter G. Tomaino Jr. Wellsburg, West Virginia Obituary

Peter G. Tomaino Jr.

Peter "Pete" G. Tomaino, Jr, 70, of Follansbee, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2021, after a nearly 20-year courageous fight against the neurological illness multiple system atrophy (MSA). Pete was born in Steubenville, Ohio to the late Peter and Flora (Wingo) Tomaino. He graduated from the former Jefferson Union High School in1969 where he played football and was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the ranking of Eagle Scout. After graduation, he attended The Ohio State University for one year before beginning a long and successful career as a steelworker at the Weirton Steel Corporation where he retired after more than 30 years working on the 7 tandem mill. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Linda (Frye) Tomaino.  The couple first met in the fourth grade, and some may say it was love at first sight.  Although Linda moved away in their childhood, Pete never forgot about her.  When in his early 20s, he asked a mutual friend to reconnect them and as the saying goes, "the rest is history".  They went on to be married in 1976 and build a beautiful family with two daughters, April Wonsick (Nate) and Natalie Brislin (Matt), and later he became "Gramps" to four grandchildren: Kayla, Jaden, Parker and Preston.  He is also survived by one sister, Mary Beth (Robert) Carpenter of Follansbee. Pete was a selfless, dependable, and supportive family man.  He would spend countless hours at dance recitals and competitions and all-day weekend shopping trips to Pittsburgh malls.  He loved being a “girl dad” before that was a popular phrase.  His daughters and grandchildren were his pride and joy beyond measure. In his 20s and 30s, Pete was an accomplished long-distance runner completing multiple marathons throughout the Ohio Valley, Columbus and Washington, D.C.  He would regularly be seen jogging from his home in Follansbee, WV across the Market Street bridge into Brilliant, Ohio and back. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns football teams and a member of the Follansbee United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends around the dining room table filled with lots of good food and good laughs. Pete earned the nickname “Rocky” by his co-workers at Weirton Steel after Rocky Balboa, the title character of his favorite movie series. It’s with that same fighting spirit that Pete battled the debilitating MSA disease, defying expectations and finding the will to keep going in spite of the physical limitations the disease put on him.  We miss you already but we know that you are now finally at peace. Pete’s family wants to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Gables Care Center in Hopedale, Ohio and Valley Hospice for the comfort and care they provided to Pete over the past four years. Family and friends will be received on Monday, November 15, 2021, from 3p.m.to 8 p.m. with funeral services scheduled for Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Reasner’s Funeral Home in Wellsburg, WV. with Valley Hospice Chaplain Holly Faulkner officiating. Interment will follow to Oak Grove Cemetery, Follansbee, WV. Please note face masks are required for visitation and funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943, the Follansbee United Methodist Church, 1002 Virginia Avenue, Follansbee, WV, 26037 or the Multiple System Atrophy Coalition at www.multiplesystematrophy.org  Online condolences can be made at ReasnerOfWellsburg.com
