Dorothy Mae Mercer Obituary

Dorothy Mae (MacNeil) Mercer

Our beloved angel has left the earth to be an angel in heaven watching over her loving family and friends. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy (Dot, Dottie) Mae Mercer (nee MacNeil) early morning on November 10th, 2021 surrounded by her loving family at Whitehills Long Term Care facility.

Born December 18, 1937 in Iona, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia daughter of Malcolm Dan MacNeil and Christie Ann MacNeil (nee MacDonald). She was the sixth of nine children. She was predeceased by her siblings, Norman, Mary Muto, Peter, Theresa Brown and survived by siblings John Angus, Patricia Stockfish, Catherine Partington and Malcolm. Dot and her family lived in Iona until she was 15, then the family moved to Rockingham where she finished her schooling, including attending Mount Saint Vincent University. At 18 she met the love of her life Robert (Bob) Mercer. On April 4, 1959 they wed in Halifax and began their life story.

Bob being in the Airforce, they started their life long journey by moving from Halifax to Ottawa. Soon after their first daughter Kim was born, followed by Karen 23 months later. After few years a reposting took them to Winnipeg. Then much to Dot’s delight they moved back to Nova Scotia at the next posting in Greenwood. After 3 or so years Bob was again transferred, for the last time, back to Halifax. Shortly after they were settled in Rockingham, in Dot’s family home, to their great surprise daughter number 3, Krista was born. Being blessed with 3 beautiful daughters they decided a boy would complete their family. They got their wish 22 months later with the birth of Scott.

The Rockingham residence was a loving home of the Mercer family, being a central location for many Mercer and MacNeil family gatherings. Christmas parties, New Years parties, Birthday parties, card parties, a party of burning a password game that went wrong and a lot of parties just

because. Dot was the hostess with the mostest , she was an amazing cook and always made sure you were having a good time. She loved to dance, especially with her love, Bob. They had 62 plus years of marriage that was often spent dancing, whether it be at parties or just the two of them twirling around their retirement home on Molega Lake.

Dot and Bob loved to travel with family and friends. They spent 20 plus years as snow birds in Hawaiian Isles retirement park in Ruskin, Florida, where they met many new friends from the US and Canada.

Being a loving and devoted mother was Dot’s number one job. However, she also had a long career doing many jobs at Sears. She was well liked and respected by many of her co workers.

When Dot wasn’t spending her time caring for her children, washing dishes or working she could be found yelling bingo at any hall she could find, bowling strikes at the Bayers Rd bowling alley or raising her hand bidding on a rare find at an auction.

Dot was a fighter and proved her great strength when she battled breast cancer and came out a survivor. Ten years ago she was unfortunately diagnosed with dementia and lived the last 4 1/2 years in Whitehills Long Term Care Facility, where the nurses and staff became her extended family.

Our family would like to thank all of the caregivers and staff of Whitehills for their hard work, love and care they have given Dot, especially during the last few days in palliative care.

Dot leaves behind her loving family. Her cherished husband Robert, devoted daughters Kim Mercer, Karen Macintosh (Mark Mills), Krista Temple (Craig) and loving son Scott (Jean Uy). Dot was blessed with seven grandchildren, James (Kim), Daniel, Jeffrey, Victoria (Karen), Bradley and Dawson (Krista) and Christopher (Scott). To add to the Mercer clan are her dear great grandchildren Chloe, Jaxon and Jacob.

In lieu of flowers the family would like to ask that you make a donation to the Nova Scotia Alzheimer’s Society or Canadian Breast Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
