Lawrence E. "Larry" Delgrego Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” E. Delgrego of West Springfield, MA passed away on November 6, 2021, at the age of 89 11/12ths after having been seriously ill over the past few weeks. Larry was always surrounded by his loved ones. While he was ill, he faced his challenges with a smile and a joke. As he said many times over the past few years, “I’ve had a good life, we’ve had a lot of fun and I’ve been blessed with my children and Mom.” Larry and his wife Janice met as high school freshmen, and this past August celebrated 66 years of marriage. Larry was born on December 24, 1931, in Branford, CT, the son of Joseph and Gabriella Cuomo Delgrego who emigrated from Italy. He graduated from Branford High School class of 1949. Larry served the Army as a Staff Sergeant/Tank Gunner during the Cold War with the 102nd Infantry Division. During that time his unit had to be ever vigilant. Larry completed his service and obtained a BS from Quinnipiac College. He worked in finance, manufacturing and tax all his career and was past vice president of the S.S. Pierce Wine & Spirit Division. Throughout his career Larry was involved in BSA Scouting with the goal of mentoring kids and shared many funny stories about various hikes and Webelos Woods. In the years that followed Larry’s retirement he was very active in the VFW and was Commander of the West Springfield, MA division for two years and served as their financial consultant for 4 years after. Larry was also Commander of the American Legion in both Upton, MA and West Springfield, MA divisions for four years, and Secretary of Finance for two years. Larry assisted veterans as much as he could by offering support, arranging housing, and completing free tax work and financial consultations for over 15 years. It was of particular importance to him he was able to be of assistance to his son-in-law Wayne, a Vietnam Veteran, and 3 of his grandsons, 2 of whom are still on active duty and deployed. He was committed to his service to his country and other veterans. Larry was honored as Veteran of the Year for the City of West Springfield, MA in 2016. In addition to his parents, Larry is predeceased by his sister Marie Delgrego and his brother Donald Delgrego. Larry is survived by his wife Janice, his five children, Patricia Hayward, Pamela Perdue, Joan Schermerhorn and her husband Van, Lawrence J. Delgrego and Anne DeCillis and her husband Wayne; and his sister Eleanor Higney of Branford. Larry took great delight in his 7 grandsons, Joseph Hasson, Christopher Hasson, Andrew Hasson, Jonathan Caserta, Paul Caserta, Frederick Gamache, Ben Perdue, his nieces and nephews, Natasha Norton, Lisa Giddings, Marc Mailloux, Steven Mailloux, all their families and his 4 great grandchildren. As he said to us, “It’s my time, I’ve had a good life, and it’s ok.” As we would say to him, “You’re the best Husband, Dad, Uncle, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa in the world.” Larry will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Bosco Parish in St. Mary Church, 731 Main Street, Branford, Monday November 15 at 10:30 AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas Church in West Springfield at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made through W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, CT 06405, to the Quilt of Valor Foundation whose mission is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The family wishes to assist the QOV First City Group.
