Elizabeth Hazel Luft

Elizabeth Hazel DeLisle was born on February 17, 1928 in Monroe, Michigan. She was one of three children born from the union of Fredrick and Hazel (Clark) DeLisle. As a young girl, Elizabeth attended classes in a one room schoolhouse on Albain Road in Monroe. She grew up on a farm and was always outside helping her father. She even learned to drive a tractor at the young age of seven!<br><br>In September of 1947, Elizabeth wed Harold Meek. The couple were blessed with two sons and enjoyed eighteen years of marriage before his passing in 1965. In the spring of 1972, she married Herbert Luft and was fortunate to have another twenty-six years of wedded bliss before his passing in 1998. Elizabeth was not one to let the grass grow under her feet. She was the co-owner of a Shell gas station with her husband, Harold, and also worked in the cafeteria at the Fermi-Unit 1 Nuclear Generation Station, as a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn hotel, and at Ternes auto parts distributor. She was employed by Jefferson School District as a school bus driver for more than twenty years before retiring in 1998.<br><br>A lifelong parishioner of Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe, Elizabeth volunteered in the hot lunchroom at Trinity Lutheran School. She was also a Cub Scout leader. Elizabeth had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She visited her son Tom in Washington State and Oregon and drove through the mountains of Colorado with her son, Jerry. She once visited fourteen different National Parks and monuments in a single three-week long trip and even made her way across the ocean to England and Ireland. Elizabeth was very outgoing and loved to dance. Whenever music could be heard, her feet were always moving along to the beat. She loved to spend time with her friends and family playing Bingo, Yahtzee, Bunko, and Euchre.<br><br>Elizabeth Hazel Luft, age 93, of Monroe passed away peacefully on November 6, 2021 at Wellspring Lutheran Services in Monroe. Her passing was preceded by both husbands: Harold Meek and Herbert Luft; a brother: Richard DeLisle; and a sister: Virginia Gonya.<br><br>To cherish her memory, she leaves two sons: Jerry (Myrna) Meek and Tom (Mary) Meek; six grandchildren: Brian (Heather) Meek, Steven Meek, Paul (Elke) Meek, James (Brenda) Meek, Michael (Heidi) Meek, and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Kurt) Hillmer; ten great-grandchildren: Jessica, Tyler, Sydney, Hayden, Mikael, Brodi, Curtis, Maggie, Alice, and Lucy; great-great-grandsons: Joseph and Benjamin and; three step great-grandchildren: Kailey, Breanne and Meagan; and step great-great-grandsons: Braecen and T.J.<br><br>Friends may gather from 2:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesday; November 10, 2021 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070. A worship service celebrating Elizabeth’s life officiated by Pastor Daniel Potts will be held at 11:00am on Thursday; November 11, 2021 also at Merkle’s.
