Roy Leon Snider was born November 3, 1936 in Des Moines, NM to Cornelius and Hermie Opal (Massegee) Snider. He passed away November 6, 2021 at home with loved ones by his side. He grew up mostly in the San Luis Valley and settled permanently in Alamosa when he was about twelve. His parents were hard working people and taught him the value of hard work. He use to often say, “If you want something, get up and go to work.” As a teenager he worked various jobs, including the highway department when La Veta pass was being relocated. He graduated from Alamosa High School in 1955. Leon served in the Army from 1959-1961 and in the Army reserve until 1965. He was stationed in Japan and Korea at the end of the Korean War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman for Rifle.

When Leon returned from the Army he worked for Rio Grande Motorway for sixteen years. Just before leaving Motorway he bought Gammon’s Smoked Meats and changed the name to Snider’s Smokehouse. Leon expanded the product line and introduced his wonderful beef jerky. He enjoyed his business and loved his customers. Due to illness the smokehouse closed in 2014.

Leon is member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife Maurine who survives him in their home in Alamosa, were sealed together September 2005 in the Albuquerque, NM. temple. He is also survived by his son Rick Snider of Prairie Du Sac, WI, daughter Connie Zimmerman of Wisconsin, son Randy Snider of Dallas, TX. and son Bryce Snider of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by Maurine’s children, son Russell Price (Tiana) of Payson, Arizona, daughter Robin Price of Alamosa, Colorado, and son Jim Price (Liz) of Huntington Beach, CA. Although not linked by genetics they and their offspring are connected to him by love. He is survived by his brother Robert Cornelius (Lois), Phoenix, AZ. sister Shirley White, Tucson, AZ. and brother Leonard (Joan) Heber, Utah. Leon is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Francis, and sister Eva Hale.

There will be a viewing on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Rogers Family Mortuary at 205 State Avenue in Alamosa.

There will be a second viewing from 10 am to 10:30 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 300 Richardson Street in Alamosa on Thursday, November 11, 2021 followed by the service at 11 am. After which Leon will be buried at the cemetery in Sanford, CO.
