Ann Hines Charles Ann Hines, our dear Miss Ann, passed on to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 6th after a brief hospital stay and unexpected turn of events. She was born Charles Ann Small on June 14th 1939 in Hot Springs to A.W. Small and Ruby Kennedy Small. She was named after her beloved grandfather, Charles Andrew and for those that knew her growing up in school, she was Charles Ann. She was a spitfire and bundle of energy from day one but had the sweetest, most humble spirit with a servant’s heart. She was a lifelong member of Oaklawn United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, Kid’s for Christ leader, choir member and many other capacities. She was a 1957 graduate of Hot Springs High, started dating the love of her life, Sonny Hines, an ole Lakeside Ram, in April 1956. They were married August 15th 1958 and recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. After adopting their newborn and much adored daughter, Audrey Lynn in 1965, and precious 4 month old son Michael in 1973, their family was complete. A family truly made in heaven and orchestrated by the hand of God. The four of them couldn’t have possibly been blessed with a better life together. Ann was an executive secretary for Charles J. Cella, owner of Oaklawn Park for 15 years. She always had a passion for children and it was that passion that led to her opening and operating “Miss Ann’s Day Care” after renovating Sonny’s garage into a playhouse/daycare facility. She loved and cared for mostly school teacher’s children, as if they were her own, for 24 years, so that she could enjoy summers off and vacations with her own children and family. When Sonny took an early retirement at age 59, she soon after closed the daycare and they embarked on a season of travel, taking several 6 week trips across the U.S., with dear friends. One of their favorite lifelong memories was a literal trip around the world from Asia to Europe in 1985. Because of the daycare, she was even called “Miss Ann” by her four adoring grandchildren. Later she also answered to ‘Granny Ann” the name given her by her special neighbors, the Beaty’s, whom she loved as her own. Miss Ann was predeceased by her parents and her beloved son Michael, after his untimely death in 2016. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, James “Sonny” Hines; her daughter, Lynn Shaffer and husband Mickey of Friendship, Ar; daughter-in-law, Kelly Mickens Hines; 4 grandchildren, Gunnar Shaffer and Alex Shaffer both of Little Rock and Paige and Preslie Hines. Also surviving are her sister, Bonnie Hardin; sisters-in-law, Erma Hines Steelsmith and Karyn Hines along with special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly. Miss Ann was one of a kind, and loved by all. Her life and legacy will carry on in those most dear to her. Celebration of Life will be Friday, November 12, 2021 at 10:00am with visitation immediately following at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home 155 Section Line Rd, Hot Springs, AR. It was Ann’s wish to be cremated. There will be a private graveside at a later date. Memorials may be made to Oaklawn United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Honorary Pallbearers include Christie, Kelly and Ashlyn Beaty, Wayne and Kelly Thomason, The Saturday Night Gang, Hot Springs Cruisers, and Miss Ann’s daycare kids and parents.
