Stanley Monroe Thompson Obituary

Stanley Monroe Thompson, 87 of Forest City, died Saturday, November 6, 2021, peacefully at his home. Memorial Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday November 10, 2021, at Schott Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, Iowa 50436. Burial of cremains will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City with Veteran Honors performed by the Forest City American Legion Post #121. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Stanley Thompson memorial fund in care of the family. Stanley was born December 18th, 1933, in Leland, IA. He was the son of Mabel T Thompson (Helgeson) and Maynard T Thompson. Stanley was raised on a farm near Leland, IA. He helped on the farm and looked forward to riding to town with his family on Saturday’s. Stanley and his siblings would each get an allowance to spend on these outings. Stanley joined the army in 1955. While stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado, he met his first wife, Gloria Montoya. They were married and moved to Forest City, IA where they raised four children; Bernie, Paul, Jody, and Nicole. Later in life, Stanley met his soulmate, Carolyn. On a rainy day in April, Stanley and Carolyn drove to South Dakota to be married. They were married for 40 years and raised two daughters from previous marriages, Nicole and Jackie. While married, they enjoyed drives in their convertible, dancing, and spending time with family. Stanley worked at the Grist Mill for 13 years. He and his brother, Clair Thompson, had an opportunity to buy a roofing company and Thompson Roofing was formed. He enjoyed working with his brothers, Clair and Gary and continued on that journey until he joined the maintenance department at Waldorf College in 1990. Stanley had the ability to be able to fix anything so working in the maintenance department was a perfect fit. He enjoyed working there until he retired in 1997. Stanley liked to keep busy, he said “it kept him young”. He took a year of retirement, working in his garage and attending to his lawn. Stanley loved to ride his tractor and mow. He couldn’t stay retired long and started working at the Oakland Cemetery in 1998. He took great pride in making sure the cemetery was tidy so that others could be with their loved ones. Stanley enjoyed this work until his retirement in 2014. Stanley had many hobbies. He always “put a little humor” in everything that he did. He loved woodworking and he could build anything. He enjoyed drives in his red Ford Mustang. He also made sure to “take a shortcut” while traveling from town to town visiting family. He tended to his garden and was always eager to share his crops with others. His pride tractor was his red Farmall tractor. He gave many rides to his children and grandchildren in the bucket in the front. With all his many hobbies, he also made time to dance around the kitchen with his wife, Carolyn. Stanley was a loving husband, father, son, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed. Stanley is survived by his wife, Carolyn R Thompson; brother, Lynn M Thompson (Linda); children, Bernard S. Thompson (Renee), Paul S. Thompson (Ramona); Jody S. Collins (Michael), Nicole S. Ochoa (Israel); Jacqueline E. Berg (John), Ronald R. Liljedahl (Lori); Nancy M. Hickman (Marvin), Sandra R. Madden, Sharyl A. Anderson (Steve), Susan M. Odden; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
