Belmont, North Carolina James "Wofford" Scruggs, 87, of Belmont passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Stanley Total Living Center, Stanley, NC. He was lovingly cared for with the compassionate ministry provided by the exceptional nurses and C.N.A.'s while living there. He was the eldest son of the late Gother Vencil "G.V." and Annie Gerturde Bailey Scruggs. He was born on May 11, 1934 in Cleveland County, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Reid Scruggs, and his beloved wife, Joyce Ann Hayes Scruggs. He is survived by his loving family: daughter, Melanie Jones and husband, Scott; son, Cliff Scruggs and wife, Jessica: sister-in-law, Nancy Scruggs; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Jones, Tori Kenyon and husband Ian, Megan Scruggs and Rachel Scruggs; and other family members he deeply loved. Wofford was a Christian and a member of South Point Baptist Church, Belmont, NC. He was a US army Veteran and he worked for Duke Energy since age 17 at Cliffside Steam Plant, being transferred to several power plant locations and retiring at Catawba Nuclear Station in May, 1989. He loved the Lord, his family, his church, leading others to Christ, gardening, reading, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels during his early retirement. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will receive friends from 1:30pm until 2:45pm on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at South Point Baptist Church in Belmont, NC. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 3:00pm at the church with Reverend Mike Phillips officiating.Interment will be in Evergreen, A Quite Place.
