Obituary

Howard Anderson “Andy” Hensley

May 4, 1949 – November 1, 2021

Howard Anderson “Andy” Hensley (72) died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones and his dogs on November 1, 2021.  Born May 4, 1949, Andy grew up in Hopedale, NC.  He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy and attended both Wingate College and Elon College.  Andy spent over 40 years in the clothing apparel industry, serving as a self-employed Sales Representative for men’s clothing and apparel.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Men’s Apparel Club of the Carolinas and received numerous awards in recognition of record sales.   Andy’s warm and gregarious personality made him a great salesman.

Andy’s greatest enjoyments in life included playing golf, shagging and King Charles Cavalier Spaniels.  He loved golfing at the Surf Club in North Myrtle Beach, SC, where he also served on the Board of Directors for the Surf Club.  While at the beach, Andy could often be seen shagging to beach music with a grin on his face.  His love of dancing and golfing was overshadowed by his love for his King Charles Cavalier Spaniel dogs, as evidenced by the number he had over the years.  Andy was always the life of any gathering and he cared deeply for his friends and relatives.  He had a knack for making people laugh in any situation. Andy will be sorely missed by all who had the great fortune to know him.

Andy was preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Hensley Payne and step-father Joe Payne of Burlington, NC, and his father Howard Anderson Hensley, Sr of Hopedale, NC.  He is survived by Betty Hensley of Matthews, NC, Randall Hensley (Mary Ann) of Chaplin, SC, Brent Hensley (Kay) of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and sister Beth Hensley McElveen of Staunton, VA and Ken McAlister of Staunton, VA.    He is also survived by nieces Meg Morris (David), Sarah McElveen Carter (Landon), Emily Buchanan (Chris), Samantha Delancy (Michael), and by nephews Gregory Harden Clemmer (Brandy), Wesley McElveen (Katie), Chris Harris and Ryan Harris.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oak Ridge Military Academy (2317 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, NC 27310) or the Cavalier Rescue Trust (www.cavalierrescuetrust.org).

A celebration of Andy’s life will be held at 11:00AM on November 20, 2021, at St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be offered at Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center (www.carolinafuneral.com).
