Greg Martinez was born on Saturday, March 13, 1948 in Torrington, Wyoming to Pete and Lena (Lopez) Martinez of Sunrise, Wyoming.  Greg attended school in Sunrise and Guernsey and enlisted in the United States Army in 1969 where he served as a Green Beret. After initial service, Greg used his G.I. Bill to receive an Associate’s Degree in Plumbing and Refrigeration, and spent five years working in this trade. During this time, Greg married and had two children, Sean and Talisha. In 1979, Greg re-entered the Army and was stationed in Guernsey until retirement.  Greg received many awards and promotions, including AGR of the year. During his military service, he traveled to many different countries, felt so blessed for these experiences, and held in high regard the people he met.  In 1998, Greg remarried Valarie, adopted her children Jamie and Nate, and cared for his step-son Zack. Greg was a devoted and active father in all his children’s lives.  He coached little league, basketball, and attended all games and activities while his children were in school. He also enjoyed bringing his family along on outdoor adventures; something his siblings and he were fond of while growing up.  Greg retired from the military in 2001, after a cumulative of 34 years of active service.  He then used the G.I. Bill to become a taxidermist, opened a small business in Guernsey, and continued taxidermy for many years.  In 2012, Greg was diagnosed with cancer and in 2015, he began dialysis treatments for kidney failure.  These two-diagnosis required him to take up residency sporadically in Cheyenne and Laramie.  These treatments, however, did not keep Greg down. He continued his favorite hobbies of camping, hunting, fishing, golfing, and painting with friends, siblings, children, and grandchildren.  Anyone who knew Greg knew that his grandchildren were the apple of his eye.  Just before his death, Greg stated that his “friends and family took good care of him, allowing him to live a good, happy life.”

Gregory Martinez is survived by children Sean, Talisha, and Jamie of Laramie, Nate and Haiden of Guernsey, and Zack of Gillette; siblings, Ray and Jeanie of Cheyenne, Olivia and Sam of Cheyenne, Pete and Mary of Gillette, and Marty and Debbie of Laramie; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was proceeded in death by wife Valarie, and parents, Pete and Lena.

The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland are in charge of the arrangements.
