Helen Mae "Sally" Monroe

Helen Mae “Sally” Monroe, age 93, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Drews Country Living in Hillsdale. She was born March 14, 1928, in Hillsdale to Dale “Carl” and Esther (Peters) Crawford. Sally married Elvin “Al” Wilkins on April 10, 1947, and he preceded her in death on July 8, 1990. She later married Richard Monroe on August 7, 1994, and he preceded on October 4, 2017. Sally graduated from Hillsdale High School, and she worked for 25 years as a nurse at the former Maple Lawn Nursing Home and Hillsdale Hospital. Sally was a devoted member of the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church where she served in many areas including Sunday school teacher, head of Hospital Committee, funeral grief and memorial dedications committee, and the official church board. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, and spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Tony) Nuyen of Brooksville, Florida and Pamila Wilkins of Braselton, Georgia; three stepchildren, Mary Green of Hillsdale, Ray Monroe of Reading, and Don (Pamela) Monroe of Reading; one grandson, Lynnsy (Elizabeth) Maxwell of Paw Paw; four great-grandchildren, Dane, Megan, Kamryn, and Jyllian Maxwell; one brother, Vern (Beverly) Crawford of Eaton Rapids; nine step grandchildren; thirteen step great-grandchildren; and seven step great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Sally was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sue Ellen Wilkins; nine siblings, Clair, Paul, Dale, Wayne, Ted, Carl, Ethel, Edna, and Vera; stepson, Tim Monroe; one step grandchild; and one step great-great-grandchild. Funeral services for Sally Monroe will take place Thursday, November 4, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Porter officiating. Family interment will take place at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church.
