Joan Histed

Joan Histed, 83, of Crestline, died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Millcreek Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Galion, after a short illness Born Stella Joan Van Horn to Ernest and Stella (Morton Fortney) Van Horn on March 23, 1932 in Crestline, she eventually married Clayton Albert Histed, Jr. on May 24, 1950. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1983. Joan was a member of the 1950 Class of Crestline High School. She attended Ashland University and later fulfilled her dream of being a fifth generation teacher in her family. She taught at various schools in the area but most of her teaching was at Buckeye Central and later along with Nancy Smith, pioneered the first pre-school in Crestline at First United Methodist Church. In later years she was an officer and trustee of the Morton One Room School House project in Sharon Township, Shelby. Joan grew up at a time when Crestline was thriving and often told stories about the people and events that are part of the community history. She could often look at an old picture of the town and tell exactly who the people were in attendance and what event was taking place. She learned to read at a very young age being "home schooled" in the late 30's by her grandmother and grandfather, Otho and Viola (Sarah Molder) Morton and kindled that love for reading and learning in her children. She left behind a large collection of books and reading materials that she collected over the years, and up until her recent illness she spent hours reading and researching online. She leaves behind two sons and a daughter; Jeff (Kathleen Kelliher) Histed, Mansfield, Mr. Kim Butler Histed, Crestline, Lucinda Kay (John) Herold, Crestline, five grandchildren; Clayton, (Kitty Hassig) Herold, Dr. Emily S. Herold, Hollister and Kathy June Histed, Elise Histed, Hannah and Aaron Bard, great-grandchildren; Faith Gregory, Nathan Histed, Dominick Martin, Jayden Histed and Chloe Herold. Six nephews; Bobby (Lucinda) Histed, Bill Histed, Brad (Janet Morris) Histed, Bruce (Nancy) Histed, Ricky and Randy Dietsch. Three nieces, Brenda (Martin Searle) Histed, Lisa (John) Charles and Amy Dietsch, a brother to her, Dr. Lawrence (Marilyn) Morton, and a sister to her, Carole Mayer Histed (Robert Berdette Histed, Sr.), Lakeland, FL, special friends: Leo and Jayne Anatra, Florice Roland, Jack and Nancy Smith, Faye Toy and Nina Nedelkoff, Betty (Ambrose Metzger) and Tom and Janet Claybaugh, Pam and John Boals, Dorothy Dapper and a dog she bought from an Amish farm which she named Yoder. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Bessie (Robert) Fortney Dietsch. Friends may call after 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline, with Pastor Becky Weamer officiating. Her family will place her ashes in the ocean as well as by her husband Clayton at Greenlawn cemetery, Crestline.
