Anita Harriet Janis Obituary

Anita Harriet “Penny” Janis was born on August 12, 1937 in Pine Ridge, SD to Thomas Conroy, Sr. and Jeanette (Ross) Conroy. Penny made her journey to the Spirit World on October 27, 2021 at her home in Pine Ridge, SD. Anita H. (Conroy) Janis is the oldest of 5 siblings: Tom, Alma, Joanne and Chuck. Anita attended school at Saint Mary’s school for girls in her younger years. She attended her High school years at OCHS where she found the love of her life. Anita and Wilbert met their freshman year of 1951 during all school Mayday Celebration, where she first set eyes on him while he was playing the trumpet, ushering in the May pole dancers. Anita and Wilbert were in choir and many other activities while attending OCHS. Wilbert took notice to Anita and would always walk her to class. They had a lot in common Anita enjoyed listening to Wilbert’s stories about growing up in the Badlands, the Bombing Range and Kyle. They were inseparable. During their senior year of high school they got married at the Holy Cross Church in Pine Ridge, SD on February 12, 1955. Anita Graduated from OCHS in 1955 alongside Wilbert. Then went on to attend college at BHS together where they both majored in Business for two years. Since the 60’s she has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary thanks to her father Thomas Conroy, Sr. Anita and Wilbert were blessed with 5 children: Arlen, Deborah, Rodney, Kayanne and Ross. Anita traveled many to places visiting family and friends with her beloved Wilbert and Children. They moved to a lot of places from Shiprock, NM to Farmington, NM to Crown Point, and eventually settling back home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where she started working on the School Board and also became the Treasurer of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Anita loved her grandkids and was always surrounded by them. She was over the moon when she started having great-grandchildren. Anita always went above and beyond for her grandchildren and everyone she loved, especially during the holidays. Anita enjoyed reminiscing about the old days traveling with Wilbert about all the beautiful places they had seen together and all the fun activities they did. She loved listening to Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson and Ronnie Milsap, and many more. Reading was her main hobby. When she discovered Facebook she was in awe being able to reconnect with old friends and family. Anita was loved by many and will be missed by all.
