Paul D. Barnes, MD

Paul D. Barnes, M.D., longtime Washingtonian, died on October 26, 2021. He was 92. Paul Barnes was born in Georgetown Hospital on July 17, 1929, to Charles Edward Barnes and the former Helen Ethel Roche, both natives of Washington, D.C. Paul attended St. Gabriel School on Grant Circle; he then attended Gonzaga College High School and graduated in 1947. He matriculated at Georgetown University and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Biology, before attending Georgetown Medical School, where he graduated in 1955. Paul then began his medical rotating internship at the District of Columbia General Hospital. In 1957, after he completed the first year of his residency in psychiatry, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a psychiatry resident at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, serving there for two years. In 1959, he returned to Washington, DC and completed his residency at Georgetown in 1960. Following his training, Paul would spend his entire career as a faculty member with the Georgetown University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, first at D.C. General Hospital before moving to the Washington D.C. VA Hospital when it opened in 1965. At the VA Hospital Paul was the Chief of the Psychiatric Consultation Service where he taught and worked with psychiatric residents, medical students, and all staff. He retired from the VA Hospital in 1992; he would continue his affiliation with Georgetown until 2010. In addition to his affiliation with Georgetown, Paul maintained a private practice in psychiatry in Chevy Chase, MD; Paul always felt honored to have this practice which allowed him to help so many. In November, 1955, Paul married Paula Sue Burns, another Washingtonian who graduated from Trinity College, Washington D.C. They spent their honeymoon in Williamsburg, Virginia, and happily returned there virtually every year throughout their 60-year marriage. In 1965, Paul and Paula moved to the Old Farm community in Rockville, MD where they raised their family and were founding and active members of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. Eternally grateful for their Catholic educations, Paul and Paula were both proud to work for Catholic schools, Georgetown University and the Academy of the Holy Cross, respectively. From a young age, Paul was passionate about sports, serving as the sports editor for Gonzaga’s Aquilian newspaper and as an usher at Griffith Stadium. He attended hundreds of games as a longtime season ticket holder for the Washington Football Team and the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team, and relished the championships those teams won. Paul will be dearly missed by his family and the many friends he made over his long life in the Washington, DC area. Dr. Barnes is survived by his four children: David C. Barnes, MD (Ann Lapham Barnes), JoAnna J. Barnes (David M. Margolis, MD), Susan Barnes, and Stephen P. Barnes (Suzy Roth Barnes). He is survived by nine grandchildren: Connor Barnes, Ashley Barnes Gaitan, MD (Luis Gaitan), Sara Margolis, Daniel Margolis, Kammie Murphy, Caroline Murphy, Andrew Murphy, Matthew Barnes, and Evelyn Barnes; and his great-granddaughter Lily Barnes. His wife, Paula, died in 2015. Relatives and friends may call at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, 917 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852 on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from 9 to 10 a.m.; Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Immediately following will be a private interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
