Elizabeth C. Carpenter Obituary

Elizabeth Catherine “Betty” Carpenter (nee Williams) of Delaware Avenue, Painted Post passed peacefully on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 after 101 years of a life well-lived. She was most recently a resident of Taylor Health Center, yet she was still going strong as demonstrated at our special family fall celebration of Carpenter Farm Days in early October.

Betty was born April 28, 1920 in Corning, NY, daughter of the late Herbert A. and Ruth A. (Taynton) Williams. She resided with her family on High Street in Painted Post, NY and graduated from Painted Post High School in 1937. After high school, Betty went on to graduate from Corning Business Institute and was a bookkeeper for Bern Furniture Store in Corning. Betty's older brother, Herbert, introduced her to a fellow PPHS graduate, a swell guy named Jim Carpenter. On October 12, 1940 Betty and Jim were married and they lived a life together that we can only wish our lives to be as successful, full of joy and loving as theirs.

Betty and Jim had four children who will miss her dearly: Carol Ann (Doug) Campbell of Keuka Lake and Venice, Florida; James W. (Sharon) Carpenter, Jr. of Mitchellsville, NY; Alan (Jean) Carpenter of Hammondsport, NY; and Herb (Teri) Carpenter of Penn Yan, NY. Seven grandchildren include Scott (Daphne) Campbell of Huntersville, NC; Mark (Jennifer) Campbell of Charlotte, NC; TJ (Sue Lafratta) Carpenter of Mitchellsville, NY; Jonathan (Oezzy) Carpenter of Mitchellsville, NY and Berlin, Germany; Laura (Matt) House of Memphis, TN; Elise (Paul) Torre of Houston, TX; and Katie (Scott Thompson) Carpenter of Rochester, NY. Five surviving great-grandchildren are Hailee Campbell of Huntersville, NC; Elias Carpenter and Ella Carpenter of Berlin, Germany; twins Gabrielle and Lydia Campbell of Charlotte, NC. Betty was pre-deceased by her great-grandchild, Garrett Campbell, of Huntersville, NC.

Betty was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Corning and was a long time member of Corning Hospital Chapter Q.

Betty and Jim and their family enjoyed many summers at Camp Arey on Keuka Lake. Also, Betty and Jim were blessed to have many good friends in the Post, and they both loved playing cards with their friends. A special thanks goes out to those folks who have kept an eye out for Betty as she got up in years, including Bea, Walt, Ed, Augie, Lois and Lois. Thank you also to the team at Taylor Health Center for their care and compassion for mom, and for a job well done.

Betty was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, James Walter Carpenter in 2010; her parents, Herbert and Ruth Williams; her three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Herbert (Jean) Williams of Corning, NY; Lewis (Betty) Williams of Winston-Salem, NC; John Williams of Cooper Plains, NY and is survived by a sister-in-law: Sylvia Williams of Cooper Plains, NY.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, November 19, 2021 at 1:30 PM at the Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Betty's name may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 171 West Pulteney Street, Corning, NY 14830 or Taylor Health Center, 7571 State Rt. 54, Bath, NY 14810.
