Barbara Jo West Obituary

Barbara Jo Waybourn West, 83, of Amarillo, passed away on October 27, 2021 in Amarillo. Celebration of Life services will be 2:00 PM Saturday October 30, 2021 at Coulter Road Baptist Church, 4108 Coulter Street with Jim Benton and Jeff Messer officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday October 29, 2021 at the Funeral home from 6:00 – 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home. It is her wish that at that time as many of her former students attend and tell stories and reminisce about the happy times had in her classes. As for Final Resting, she will be cremated and buried as a later date beside her beloved husband of 44 years, by her parents and many beloved friends. The burial will take place in East Mound Cemetery at Matador, TX.

Barbara was born October 13, 1938 in Matador of Motley County Texas to Gerald and Edna Leonard Waybourn. She grew up on the family farm/ranch north of Matador. She graduated from Matador High school in 1957 and in 1961 she received her Bachelors from Texas Women’s University where she later worked on her Masters. She spent the next 31 years as a public school teacher. Teaching post include, Sanford Fritch, Paton Springs School at Afton, Childress High School, Andrews’s high school, Canyon High School, and Retired from Randall High School in 1993.

For the last 18 years she was devoted to her great-great niece, Emeline Fulton and her different activities, attending multiple activities. Emeline was Barbara’s sunshine.

Barbara married Jimmy B. West in Childress on December 27, 1972. They lived for three years in Andrews before moving to Amarillo in 1976. She was an active member of the Texas State Teachers, Texas Classroom Teachers and the Vocational Home Making Teachers Association throughout her teaching career. Following her retirement in 1993, she became active in Retired Teachers and Amarillo Genealogical Society of which she and her husband served as program chairmen for three years.

Barbara received many awards: Outstanding Service Award and she was the first recipient inducted into the Randall High School Hall of Fame along with numerous other acknowledgements.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Geraldine Key and husband of Matador; and her husband Jimmy West on July 18, 2017.

Survivors include Toni Ratliff and husband Dennis of Paducah, Floyd Key and wife Denise of Childress, Great nieces and nephews; Eric Key of Childress, Kristen Roberts and husband John of Canyon, Scott Fulton and wife Jenny of Matador, and their son Cooper, Alysia Fulton and daughter, Emeline of Paducah. Survivors as also include a host of extended family, nieces, Margo Boyd and Traci West and Great Nieces Robyn Jones and Kelley Parker. Special friends, Melody Swauger, DeVonna Clark and the residents at Bivins Pointe and the Ware Assisted Living.

The Family requests Memorials may be send to Randall High School Student assistance fund and the Amarillo Panhandle Humane Society, and also to Martha’s Home.
