John F. Hammes

John F. Hammes, age 87, U.S. Navy veteran, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1968, formerly of Des Moines, IA, passed away at Seasons Hospice Home in Naperville on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. He was born December 1, 1933 in Estherville, IA. Beloved husband of 55 years to Janet E. Hammes (nee Lorentzen), whom he married October 8, 1966, loving father of Wendy (Steven) Gaston of Oswego, IL and Marty Kugelberg of McCordsville, IN, adored grandfather of Cole and Aidan Gaston; Mitchell and Grant Kugelberg, devoted son of the late Ted and Mary (nee Lawless) Hammes, dear brother of Molly Hewitt of Urbandale, IA, the late Betty Hammes, the late Therese Killmar and the late Barbara Andrade, fond uncle, great-uncle and friend of many. John grew up in the Des Moines area, was a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines and received his degree in Pharmacy from Drake University in Des Moines. He worked as a pharmacist in the Naperville area for many years. John was a proud American who loved his country. He attended Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island and graduated as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade (LTJG). John loved watching sports and spending time boating and sitting on the pier with family and friends at his lake cottage in New Hampshire. A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2021, from 1:00-5:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S Mill St., Naperville. A celebration of John’s life will follow on Sunday, 5:00 PM in the funeral home. Future inurnment: Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
