<p>Gerald &ldquo;Jerry&rdquo; Duane Hanson, 89, passed away in Petoskey on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. Jerry was born in Cheboygan on August 15, 1932, the son of Frederick and Olive (Tallman) Hanson.</p> <p>Gerald spent most of his life in Cheboygan, graduating from Cheboygan High School in 1950 before graduating from MSU in 1955. After graduating, Jerry served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1955-1959 as an Officer and First LT. in Kentucky and Germany.</p> <p>After his service, Jerry went back to school to earn his Masters of Art from Central Michigan in 1963. He later earned his Education Specialist Degree from CMU in 1967.</p> <p>Jerry married the love of his life, Janet Haut on January 19, 1952 in Lansing. Janet blessed him with almost 70 years.</p> <p>Gerald spent much of his career serving the community as a teacher, principal and Superintendent in Ellsworth, Breckenridge, and Cheboygan, spending 20 years as the Intermediate Superintendent of Schools for COP. After retiring in 1988, Jerry was the Supervisor for Student Teachers in Northern Michigan for CMU and also the supervisor at the Cheboygan Fair Grounds.</p> <p>Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming. He was also an excellent carpenter, building three houses and other projects. He was a family man who loved planning parties for birthdays and holidays. He was a member of the City Council in Ellsworth for a year and the Cheboygan City Council for four years. Jerry served as a Selective Service Board Member for 20 years and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan for 50 years. He was also an active member in the Ellsworth Lions Club, Phi Delta Kappa member, and the Rotary Club in both Breckenridge and Cheboygan.</p> <p>Jerry is survived by his wife, four children, Joy (Doyle) Wood, Jeannie (Rick) Kolb, Jeff (Kristie) Hanson, and Jill (Keith) Moore, 10 grandchildren, Ryan (Karen) Eustice, Janae (Jay) Russell, Charla (Zac) Burill, Jessica (Pitch) Powers, Callie (Matt) Barr, Jennifer Lucas, Karrah (Carmine) Cesario, Molly (James) Jonna, Erik (Jeremy Colborn) Hanson, and Mackenzie (Justin) Steele, 26 great-grandchildren with two more on the way, in-laws, Delores King, Marilyn and Milne Witbeck, Mary Haut, Wayne and Bonita Haut, Charlene McNitt, Randy and Kathy Haut, special friends, Walter and Kay Burrows, and his dog, Buddy.</p> <p>Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Hanson, a grandson, Zachary Wood, his parents, a sister, Imogene Hanson, father-in-law, Ben Haut, mother-in-law, Norma Haut, and in-laws, John and Lois Coy, Howard and Meribeth Haut, Wayne King, Glenn Haut, and Larry McNitt.</p> <p>A funeral service will take place at Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00pm with family greeting friends one hour prior. A committal service will take place following the funeral at Pinehill Cemetery in Cheboygan.</p> <p>The family suggests memorials in Jerry&rsquo;s honor be made to either the History Center of Cheboygan County (Historical Society) or Lord&rsquo;s Kitchen (Food Pantry).</p>
