Robert "Sonny" Powers, 92, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2021 at 6:25 pm in Aperion Care -  Michigan City, Michigan City, Indiana.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 4:00 pm -6:00 pm, Friday, October 29, 2021 in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana with burial to take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.     

He was born November 12, 1928 in Rocky Ford, Colorado to the late Frank and Betty (Wolber) Richardson Powers. On June 23, 1951 in Michigan City, Indiana he married Betty R.(Black) Powers who preceded him in death on June 7, 2017.  Surviving are daughter, Laura Grant and son, Russell (Susan) Powers both of Michigan City, Indiana; four grandchildren, James Powers, Beth (Zach) Spoljoric, Breanna Powers and Alexis Powers; eight great-grandchildren, Makayla and Maura Grant, Dehlia  and Leo Kalvaitis, Silas, Lawson, Tucker, and Duncan Spoljoric; sister-in-law, Patricia (Black) Schultz along with many nieces and nephews; He was preceded in death by two sons, James L. Powers and Paul A. Powers; grandchild, Rob Grant; sister, Betty Lou Humelshein Penfold and beloved step-father, Lee Richardson;   

Robert served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a lifelong member of VFW Post 2536 where he enjoyed going daily to "sign the book" and visit with friends (Bruce Harris).  He retired from Cassins Transport in 1991 as a vehicle hauler.  He worked for many years after retirement at the girl scout camp as a groundskeeper along with teaching archery to the girl scouts.  He enjoyed gardening and working in the yard during his retirement.  He loved all animals, he fed the birds and squirrels daily.  He leaves behind his dog, Harry, who was a rescued and brought over from Qatar in the Middle East and his feline friends Bootsy, Mia, Oliver and Hannah.
