Deaconess Dorothy Alston Obituary

Due to Covid-19, Face Masks are required when entering the Bragg Funeral Home. Dorothy Elizabeth (Eaton) Alston better known to her family as “Smookey” was born on January 25, 1927 in Halifax County, North Carolina to the late Deacon John P. and Clara Eaton. She was the youngest of eleven children. Dorothy was educated at Mac Ivery High School in North Carolina. She relocated to Paterson after high school to be with her family who had already relocated from the south. She then became employed with Paterson Shade Company on River Street in Paterson, NJ where she was employed for 35 years before retiring. Dorothy was also a licensed beautician having graduated from the Beautician School in Montclair, NJ. She used this license to style hair in her spare time. In 1965, Dorothy married the love of her life Al Alston and they were married for 56 years. Together they raised two beautiful daughters Vivian (Gilchrist) Foster and Dorothy (Gilchrist) Thompson. GOD blessed Dorothy with a gift as a musician. She chose to use this gift to serve the Lord, playing for several church choirs which included Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, St. Luke Baptist Church, New AME Zion Church, Christ Temple Baptist Church and Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was a dedicated member at The New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for over sixty years where she served as a faithful Deaconess and a member of the Missionary Board. At the time of her death she was the oldest member. She enjoyed reading her Bible, singing, playing the piano or organ, cosmetology and reciting poetry. Her favorite Bible Verse came from Philippians 4; 13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” KJV and her favorite inspiration song was “What a Friend We have in Jesus”. Dorothy went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 25, 2021 at home with family surrounding her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Deacon John P. and Clara Eaton, her siblings Ruth, Esther, Mattis, Levious, Mable, Maggie, Wilbert, Nancy, Bertha and her son-in-law Eugene Foster, Sr. Dorothy will be forever cherished by her beloved husband Deacon Al Alston; her daughters, Vivian Foster of Paterson, NJ and Dorothy (Enman) Thompson of Willingboro, NJ. Dorothy also has (9) grandchildren, Shevon, Tyra, Trina, Earl Jr., Eugene Jr., Marcellus, Yonna, Charnay and Kiera and (10) great grandchildren and (1) great great grandchild. She loved helping people when in need. Making people feel joy and everyone enjoyed calling her MOM because she reminded others of their Moms. Her jovial spirit left an incredible mark on every person she came in contact with. Her presence will truly be missed by all.
