Wally Obituary

Walter L. Herman Died October 27, 2021 CEDAR – Walter “Wally” Leroy Herman, 90, of Solon Township, passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer, at home with his family at his side. Wally was born July 9, 1931 in Traverse City, the son of Walter and Annabelle Herman.  On October 3, 1953 at the Immaculate Conception Church of Traverse City, he married Clara (Haltley) Herman who preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2020. Wally was a man of unending energy and an inability to sit still.  Prior to retiring, he spent decades working as a Supervisor for Cone Drive Gears of Traverse City.  Wally and Clara bought their piece of paradise on Lake Leelanau in 1968, where they also settled into retirement.  He passed away in his dream home with the sun shining on him through the waterfront windows. He was the King of the Kitchen, cooking his favorite brats and burgers, always wanting to feed the family.  Wally and Clara would travel the states and visited such places as Alaska, the Upper Peninsula, Florida, Hawaii and everywhere in-between.  He enjoyed going to the casino with his wife Clara, and also cherished hunting with his dear friend Bud Walters, visits from all his friends and neighbors, including Bob Noonan and Dan Patterson, and fishing with his old neighbor Bob Sophiea.  He could also be seen riding his Kawasaki Mule named “Jezebel” on a daily basis, gathering the mail and newspapers for the neighbors. Wally is survived by his two sons, Terry (Marilyn) Herman, Randy Herman; his three grandchildren, Jacquilyn, Jeffrey and Sarah Herman; two brothers, Raymond (Carolene) Herman, Sherwood “Woody” (Romana) Herman; revered cousin, Anita (Clifford “Bud”) Walters; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Clara; a son in infancy, Scott Herman; and most recently his sister-in-law, Romana (Woody) Herman. The family expresses their deepest thanks to the staff of Munson Home Hospice, Cowell Family Cancer Center, and neighbor Debbie Schopieray for their love and care of our dearest Wally. Cremation has taken place.  A Celebration of Wally’s and Clara’s Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Munson Home Hospice, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. Please share condolences with Wally’s family at www.martinson.info. Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Leelanau.
