Donna Ingrid Sandstrom Obituary

Donna was born July 14, 1945 in Caribou, Maine to Eric Roland Sandstrom and Astrid Betty Sandstrom and died suddenly at her home in Anchorage, Alaska on October 19, 2021. Growing up in Stockholm, Maine, she moved with her family to Cordova, Alaska in June 1959 then to Anchorage, AK to raise her children. Amidst a full life of adventure, Donna most enjoyed the love of her four grandchildren. Donna was affectionately known as Mor Mor to her grandchildren, an endearing Swedish term which means, Mother's Mother. Donna had the family notoriety of being present for the birth of all four grandchildren and loved them dearly and endlessly as they all grew into adulthood. She especially loved telling the story of, learning the news that her daughter was in labor with her first grandchild, flying from Anchorage to Redmond, WA arriving via taxi at the hospital before her daughter. Donna loved traveling and visited most of the world, sailing nearly 700 days over the world's seas via cruise ships, not counting many weeks of motor coach touring in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Despite all her global travels, Donna's favorite place in the world was her little cabin at Willow, Alaska's Crystal Lake. Donna was blessed to get to spend each summer at Crystal, where she loved to waterski. Donna proudly water skied around Crystal Lake on her 60th birthday, one of her fondest memories. Donna always made sure she had a boat on the lake and taught all her grandkids as well as countless other relatives to waterski. Donna's children have vivid memories of homemade treats for Halloween trick or treaters, camping every weekend in their camper (she would not do a tent), many trips to Homer to shrimp fish off the city dock, and her amazing ability to complete what seem like a 100 errands during her lunch hours. Donna attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and Anchorage. Later, she took care of the accounting responsibilities for a number of Alaskan businesses, such as Mr. Woo's Chinese Kitchen, Chitina's Copper Valley Trading Company, Cordova's Chitina Air Service and volunteer treasurer for Turnagain United Methodist Church as well as Pharmacy assistant at Providence Hospital when it was located on L Street and a long career, wearing many different hats at Enstar Natural Gas company, from which she retired in 1997. Donna loved her work with Anchorage's civic-minded community, spending many years volunteering for Challenge Alaska, Hospice of Anchorage, and St. John Methodist Church's Wednesday Night Suppers. Donna is preceded in death by her parents; Eric Roland Sandstrom and Astrid Betty Anderson Sandstrom, and her brother Gary Sandstrom. She is survived by her siblings Dale Sandstrom and Diane Sahler, her children Pam (Phil) Okeson, Weston (Kelly) Smith, grandchildren; Alexandra, Makenna, Corbin, and Teagan. A memorial service will the held Saturday, November 6 at 1pm at St. John Methodist Church 1801 O'Malley Rd, Anchorage, Alaska 99057. Masks are required in the church. We regret that Covid prevents us from serving food or beverages. The memorial will also be live streamed on YouTube, accessed through the St. John website. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the places Donna volunteered; Challenge Alaska, Hospice of Anchorage, St. John United Methodist Church, or a charity of your choice.
