Joe Amsden

Lane “Joe” Amsden, 78, of Des Moines passed away surrounded by family on October 25, 2021, following a long battle with cancer. Joe was born in Des Moines on May 17, 1943, son of Norma Jean Plummer. Joe joined the Navy in 1960, where he served four years as a Gunner’s Mate and Quarter Master on the air carriers, USS Valley Forge and USS Princeton, as well as serving two years in the reserves. After returning from the Navy, Joe met and married Nancy Riley on May 20, 1968, and they had three children, Todd, Jodi and Jason. Following Nancy’s death, Joe met Lorna Bauer, and they shared over 20 years together, marrying on March 25, 2010. Following his service in the military, Joe had a lengthy career in siding, before retiring from Plummer Guitars. Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Jean Amsden; wife, Nancy Amsden; and brother, Daniel Amsden. Left to cherish his memory are wife, Lorna; children, Joseph “Todd” Amsden, Jodi Lynn (Scott) Seymour, Jason Luke (Thea) Amsden; daughter-in-law, Mary Westphal; sisters-in-law, Sandy Amsden and Eleisa (Jerry) Murphy; grandchildren, Melinda (Amy Hoffman) Graham, Christopher (Courtney) Seymour, Tyler (Taylor) Seymour, Conner Seymour, Tyler Amsden, Mya Amsden, Caleb Amsden; and great granddaughter, Audrey Seymour; as well as a host of other loving family and many special friends. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 28 at Iles Dunn’s Chapel, with a graveside service at Elm Grove Cemetery, 6501 Indianola Road, Des Moines, Iowa at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 29.
