Scott was raised in Fenton, MI and graduated from Fenton High School. After high school, he spent some time in Great Britain, studying art. When he returned to this country,  he became a store manager for Endicott Johnson Shoes. Scott left Endicott in 1986 to attend Indiana University South Bend, where he majored in Psychology.

After college, Scott worked at several local mental health facitiities as a counselor, and later worked for EverDry, Inc.  In the mid 1990’s he began a long career with the Indiana Department of Corrections, serving first as a counselor at the South Bend Juvenile Detention Facility, and then as a counselor in the Work-Release Program, both in South Bend.
