Dr. Hugh A. (Tony) Peacock, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, age 93, of Milton/Niceville, Florida passed away into the arms of his Lord and Savior on 23 October 2021. Dr. Peacock was the youngest of four children born to Leslie Hugh and Annie John Aldredge Peacock. He is survived by his son Ramon Peacock (Pam) and daughters Elizabeth Smith and Mary Dennis (Mark). He is survived also by granddaughters Rose Hurley (Mike), Toni Bryant (Ryan), Dr. Miriam “Mitzi” Dennis, and Melinda “Mindi” Dennis; grandsons Zachariah Peacock (Wendy), Jason Smith (Kelly), and Matthew Smith; great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Morgan Hurley, Jaycie Peacock, and Baylee MacLeod; great-grandsons Dakota and Kai Peacock, Jackson and Mattison Hudson, and Maks Hurley; special nephew Ralph Peacock (Dorian) and special niece Reesa Yarborough (Jim) as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen Peacock, daughter Linda Peacock, son-in-law Scott Smith, brothers John R. and Ralph L. Peacock, and sister Rubye E. Peacock. Dr. Peacock was born May 30, 1928, on a farm in the Bold Springs community of Grady County, Cairo, GA, attended the public schools of Pine Park and Union in Grady County, attended Cairo High School where he excelled in his studies and graduated as Valedictorian in 1945, attended Emory University at Oxford, GA, in 1945-46, and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at Tifton, GA in 1950. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1952 and a Master of Science degree in Agriculture and Genetics in 1953 from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL and a PhD in Agronomy and Plant Breeding in 1956 from Iowa State College, Ames, IA. He served in the U. S. Army, 25th Division Artillery, 8th Field Artillery Battalion in the United States and Japan from September 1946 until November 1947. He and his wife, Helen, were married on October 8, 1949. They were devoted to each other and were married for 68 ½ years at the time of Helen’s passing. In December of 1956, he was appointed Assistant Agronomist at the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), Watermelon and Grape Investigations Laboratory in Leesburg, FL. There he was in charge of forage and pasture grass investigations. In December of 1958, he and his family moved to Griffin, GA where he accepted an appointment as Agent and Agronomist in Cotton Breeding with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service and the Georgia Experiment Station. In 1973, the cotton breeding program closed and he was successful in securing an appointment as Professor of Agronomy and Center Director of the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) at Jay, FL. He and his family moved to Milton in July of 1973. He spent the next 24 years as Professor and Director of the WFREC until his retirement August 30, 1997. There he assumed, in addition to his administrative duties, the responsibility for the testing of varieties of cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans, grain sorghum, wheat, and oats to determine which varieties of the various crops would yield most in the soil and water conditions of Northwest Florida. Dr. Peacock loved his work and he liked the people he worked with and he was especially proud of the aid the WFREC was able to provide in crop production practices to the farmers in Northwest Florida, and especially to the Santa Rosa County farming community. During his 41 year career, he authored and published more than 320 professional journal papers and popular articles on his research in Agronomic crops, Plant Breeding, and Genetics. He was a life-long teacher and believed very strongly in higher education. He was a Gator fan from 1950 until the day he died. Dr. Doug Worley, Mr. Logan Fink of Pensacola Junior College, and Dr. Peacock were successful in having a branch of the University of Florida established on the Milton campus of PJC, offering Bachelor’s degrees in Natural Resource Conservation, Environmental Horticulture, and Golf and Turf Management, especially for place-bound students. Dr. Peacock was a long-time member of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, the Genetics Society of America, Soil and Crop Science Society of Florida, the Soybean Society of Florida, Northwest Florida Cattlemen’s Association, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the Agricultural Fraternity of Alpha Zeta. In addition, he was a life long member of the Methodist Church, and became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Milton in 1973, where he taught an adult Sunday school class and sang in the adult choir until his stroke in 2012. He was a member of the Milton Kiwanis Club, the Santa Rosa Historical Society, and the American Legion for many years and, in retirement, a member of the Gold Prospector’s Association of America and Gulf Coast Bluegrass Music Association. Dr. Peacock loved his immediate family and his extended family as well. He was past President of the Peacock Family Association of the South and was Treasurer of the organization until 2012. His hobbies included fishing, gardening (both vegetable and flower), hunting, raising Boer goats, and building models of cars, trucks, and airplanes. Celebration of Life services will be held at noon at the First United Methodist Church, Milton, FL with Reverends Steve Warren, Mac Fulcher, and Paul Wolfe officiating. Pallbearers are Mike Crawley, Rob Young, Sonny Greene, Mark Britton, Don Moore, and David Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers are past and present members of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Men (UMM), WFREC Faculty and Staff, and the Milton Kiwanis Club. Interment with military honors will follow at Serenity Gardens, Milton. The family will receive friends from 11 to 12 pm before the service. A gathering of family and friends will follow interment at the First United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall. Lewis Funeral Home of Milton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to SIFAT (Servants in Faith & Technology) c/o the First United Methodist Church of Milton.
