Bertil Einar "Bert" Bergstrom, age 89, a resident of Carillon in Plainfield, IL since 1999, formerly of Oak Lawn, IL, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2021, at his home. Bert was born on November 6, 1931, to Swedish immigrants Carl Einar and Ebba (nee Nelson) Bergstrom at South Shore Hospital in Chicago. Bert and his brother Bob were raised in the Grand Crossing neighborhood along with cousins, Ralph and Roger Nelson. Bert was baptized at Gustavus Adolphus Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended Park Manor School, Ruggles Elementary School and Hirsch High School (Class of 1950). Bert earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1954. Bert served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked with radio-controlled devices stateside and was honorably discharged. Bert worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron for 38 years and retired in 1992. He worked as a project estimating manager, specializing in the construction of municipal water towers. Bert was introduced to Dorothy Ann Sommer by his brother Bob and Dorothy's cousin Joanne. Bert and Dorothy married on November 23, 1960, at Drexel Park Presbyterian Church with a reception at South Shore Country Club. Bert and Dorothy raised Dorie, Lorie, and Carl in Oak Lawn. The family attended Evergreen Park Presbyterian Church where Bert served as an elder and as a deacon. The family travelled many summers to Heber Springs, Arkansas. Bert and Dorothy spent many weekends at their cottage on Hudson Lake in Indiana. After retirement, Bert and Dorothy moved to the Carillon community in Plainfield, IL and spent winters at their condo in Naples, Florida. They were blessed with fun times and wonderful friends in all these communities. Bert loved working in the yard, tinkering with electronics, keeping meticulous records at his desk, traveling to timeshares with Dorothy and attending many events involving his grandkids. He enjoyed Sudoku and jigsaw puzzles. In recent years, Bert and Dorothy attended Community Christian Church at Carillon. Bert is survived by Dorothy Ann (nee Sommer) Bergstrom, his beloved wife of 60 years; children, Dorie (Brian) Ytterberg, Lorie Bleyer, and Carl (Mary) Bergstrom; grandchildren, Brent (Aly) Ytterberg, Casey Ytterberg, Amy (Daniel) Sveen, Ethan Ytterberg, Luke Bleyer, Elizabeth Bleyer, Austin Bergstrom, Davis Bergstrom, and Marisa Bergstrom; great-grandchildren, Olan, Otto and Leo Ytterberg; sister-in-law, Corrine Bergstrom; cousins, Roger (Eileen) Nelson, Pat Nelson, Rob (Sue) Utesch as well as other cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Carl and Dorothy Sommer, his brother, Carl Robert Bergstrom, his cousin, Ralph Nelson and his son-in-law, John Eric Bleyer. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 5, 2021, from 9:30 AM-12:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL. A celebration of Bert's life with military honors will follow on Friday at 12:00 PM in the funeral home with Rev. Earl Ferguson officiating. A luncheon will follow the funeral service. Family and friends will meet Saturday, November 6, 10:30 AM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery, 11333 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453 for committal services.
