Joseph F. Beirne

Joseph Francis "Joe" Beirne, 81, of Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning October 24, 2021, complicated by dementia and a recent bout with pneumonia and sepsis which placed him in the care of Seasons Hospice. Joe is preceded by his father John Beirne and mother Mary Beirne of Grosse Pointe Michigan, sisters Mary Bridget Beirne and Kathleen Fox, niece Mary Bridget Breitenbecher, and second wife Cuma Glennon-Beirne. He is survived by sisters Margaret Breitenbecher, Audrey MacMechan and Carolyn Riley from Michigan, stepdaughters Cathy Schmidt Kerlick, Laura Royal and Donna Stiteler of Largo, Florida, grandsons Tracy Schmidt, Taylor Royal and Payton Royal and many nieces and nephews Michael, Shannon, John and Katie. He was the only son in the family of five sisters who grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan where he developed a love of hockey and professional aspirations which led him to playing in the minor hockey leagues. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Army, and then on the GI Bill and graduated DIT Tech College in Michigan, relocating to Shreveport, Louisiana where he worked in insurance sales, banking, and financial planning services. After moving to Florida, in 1972, he last worked for Goodwill Industries in fund-raising where he met his wife of 27 years Cuma Glennon, with her passing in 2018. Their devotion to non-profit causes included raising funds for Goodwill Industries, Neighborly Senior Services, Meals on Wheels, the Deaf Service Center, and the Pinellas Trail. Joe was an avid sports enthusiast, playing hockey in high school and college, and was a die-hard Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions fan. Joe enjoyed playing card games and achieved designation as a Master bridge player. Joe loved life and enjoyed traveling in retirement while sponsoring Road Scholars (Elderhostel) senior school programs in Florida and California and hosting members of Evergreen homestays travel club for seniors, with his wife Cuma. He will be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes and great sense of humor, enjoying a beer and wings at the American Legion Post 293, Madeira Beach and Largo Post 119, and hosting social events at New Haven Condominiums, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He will be missed by friends and family.
