Karla Morkel Roth Loudon, Tennessee Obituary

Karla Morkel Roth

Karla Morkel Roth of the Tellico Village Community, Loudon, TN passed away on October 23, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer lasting over a year. Born on November 26, 1946, in Columbus, OH, she was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Gordon F. Morkel and Rachel Woodward Morkel, and by her brother, Dr. Kevin E. Morkel. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, David C. Roth, and their three sons, Christopher (Katherine), Jason (Heather) and Frederick (Meg); grandchildren Aaron, Kirsten, Gavin, Katelyn, Adelynn, Abigail and Elliott; by her sister Karen DeMoss (Gene) and her brother Keith G. Morkel; as well as by many nieces and nephews. Karla graduated from Lexington High School, Lexington, OH, and earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Cornell University. She married her husband, Dave, after completing their junior years in college, and they began an exciting life together. Karla worked in law offices and an advertising agency while Dave served in the Army and went to law school. As their family grew, she switched to volunteering in schools and community service. During the family’s years in Germany with General Motors, she helped at Frankfurt International School and served on the Parents’ Organization Board. Later, living in Switzerland, she was President of the PO Board and was elected to the Board of Directors of the American International School. After relocating back to Michigan, she found the job she loved in housing and design. Karla made lasting friendships wherever she lived, and she has especially enjoyed keeping in touch with her childhood friend, Peggy, and maintaining close ties with neighbors in Michigan, a couples’ travel group that started with a group of expats living in Germany, and a women’s group that came together in Zurich. Retiring to Tellico Village in 2004 was a dream come true for Karla and Dave. They built a home on the lake with a beautiful view, and as an added plus, good friends from Michigan and another couple they met in Germany had their homes on the same cove. She also made new friends, and she participated in activities with several different groups. Karla was quite pleased when she won the contest to name the local Yacht Club restaurant – the Blue Heron. They joined Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church and enjoyed their church family, several of whom provided much needed support during her illness. Karla also enjoyed singing in the choir working on several church committees. A memorial service will be held at Christ Our Savior, 260 Wade Road W., Loudon, TN, on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Christ Our Savior Endowment Fund or to the charity of your choice.
