J. Roger Guilfoyle Obituary

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, J. Roger Guilfoyle, loving husband and father, died at home at the age of 83. On December 3, 1937, Roger was born in the Bronx, NY, to John Guilfoyle and Margaret (Higgins) Guilfoyle, where he grew up with his sister Barbara (Guilfoyle) Morpurgo. He attended Fordham Preparatory School and went on to study at Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where he graduated in 1960 with a Classical Bachelor of Arts. Roger served in Army Military Intelligence between 1961-1963, stationed in Germany during the Berlin Wall crisis. After his discharge, he worked at ID Magazine, where he met fellow editor Barbara Allen. On January 28, 1967, they were married. Roger was on the faculty of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for 50 years (1968-2018) as an Adjunct Professor, both in the History of Art and Design Department (1968-1995) and the Graduate Communications and Packaging Department (1996-2018), where he served for a time as its acting chair (2007-2008). Roger filled his life with art, literature, and politics. He saw beauty all around him and used his critical eye to see the daily ironies of existence. He was also generous, always sharing his thoughts and opinions. He was known for his sartorial sensibilities, and his bow ties were a hallmark trait. A lifelong learner, his extensive collection of books required the construction of bookcases wherever he lived. He possessed a sharp wit and believed in using language precisely. His many mantras included “all colors match”, a philosophy everyone could witness in his sophisticated and stylish choices, and “No…is a complete sentence”. He was an avid animal lover, both cats and dogs, especially Welsh corgis. Together with Barbara, he raised their son, John-Paul, in New York, the city that Roger loved. They lived on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, first on 72nd Street, then 93rd Street, before settling into a beloved apartment on 83rd near Central Park West, which they called home for a decade. Later, Roger moved with Barbara and her parents to a gracious home in Ridgefield, CT, establishing a multi-generational household and making many new great friends. He and Barbara recently continued the tradition by moving to Holmdel, NJ, and living with their son and daughter-in-law, surrounded by their five grandchildren. Roger was a grateful member of Alcoholic Anonymous and was successful in recovery for over 30 years. He generously supported new members and sponsored many through their recovery, forming life-long friendships of love and support. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Mark Morpurgo, brother-in-law Harry, sister Barbara, and niece Pam Collins. Roger is survived by his wife, Barbara, his son, John-Paul, his daughter-in-law, Christine, his five grandchildren, Margaret, Catherine, Jean, Ellie, Jack, and his nieces and nephew: Mary Jo, Meg, Andrew, and Betsy. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Rd., Middletown, NJ 07748 (732-671-1326), followed by a lunch at No Limits café, 418 NJ-35, Red Bank, NJ 07701 In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (mskcc.org) in gratitude for the thoughtful care he received.
