Luis Manuel Velazquez October 11, 1935 – October 17, 2021 Luis Manuel Velazquez, 86, of Naalehu, Hawaii, died peacefully at Ka’u Hospital. A life-long athlete, Luis was scouted by a major league baseball farm team but chose instead to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force as a medic and x-ray technician before retiring. Luis was an avid scratch golfer with 11 holes in one in his lifetime and a serious green thumb. He was legendary for his ability to grow any type of fruit, vegetable, flower or plant with a special affinity for orchids of all types. He loved to be outdoors working with his hands surrounded by his garden that he designed with his wife. Luis had a wicked sense of humor and an artistic flair that will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, adventure, and beauty. Luis is survived by his wife Beverly; his children: Cris, Viki (Doug), and Margo, and stepson Jon Heikka; two grandchildren: Jeffrey Jarvis II (Kelly), and Maile Heikka; one great grandchild: Dawson Jarvis; three siblings: Ishmael (Trudy), Naida (Jose) and Ruben (Rosie); and seven nephews and nieces. A military interment service will be held at the West Hawaii State Veteran’s Cemetery on Wednesday, October 27 at Noon. Flowers greatly appreciated but the family encourages you to plant a flower, tree, or favorite plant in his memory in the place of your choosing in lieu of.
