Tommie Ruth Merritt Born September 10, 1936 in Waco, Texas to Mary Kate Salyer Pierce and Claude Pierce. As a young child, Tommie began playing the piano for her church and evangelizing on the streets of Waco's surrounding rural communities with her accordion. She learned to impart emotion into her playing while accompanying home-based get togethers of hymn singers called "Singin's." Tommie graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Tommie was active in Peer Club, later known as Tri Delta while attending Baylor. Tommie was honored to be selected as: Baylor Beauty Maid of Cotton Homecoming Court Baylor Royalty Baylor Sweetheart Miss Waco Runner-up for Miss Heart of Texas Tommie was always a beauty, but it was her inner beauty that shone so brightly. Her humility and kindness put everyone she met at ease. Proverbs 31:30 exemplify her character. Beginning at verse 30, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." Lucian (Jerry) Gerald Merritt and Tommie Ruth Pierce met at Baylor and became husband and wife on December 22, 1956 in Waco, Texas. They were happily married for 65 years. Their daughter Lezli Diane Hammon, son-in-law David Lee Hammon, Granddaughter Emily Elizabeth Hammon and Grandson Tyler Merritt Hammon are a beloved legacy. The early days of Tommie's marriage included working as an elementary and junior high school teacher. She also served as Assistant to the Director of the Texas Community College Association. She loved the Lord with all her heart and served him throughout her life. She was active in the following: Gideon's Auxiliary President of Christian Women's Club The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Campus Crusade for Christ Tommie served Westbank Bible Church for over 40 years. Her willingness to do any job that was needed included composing melodious arrangements and accompaniments that were enjoyed every Sunday. Often, she was a featured soloist for the church. She also loved to glorify God by creating beautiful floral arrangements for the sanctuary. Her heart was always in the Scriptures. Her Bible, with its copious notes, stands testament to her love of God. Copies of Scripture could be found tucked away in drawers and taped to mirrors throughout her home. Tommie went to be with the Lord on Friday October 15, 2021. Tommie's family look forward to seeing her beautiful infectious smile once again in Heaven.
