Carlos Deupi Obituary

Loving and beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, cousin, and friend, Carlos Deupi passed away at the age of 85 on October 17, 2021, in Burke, VA. He was born in Havana, Cuba on April 27, 1936, and spent his youth in the Cuban capital. He attended the Colegio La Salle and the University of Havana, making lifelong friends at both institutions. After leaving Cuba in 1961 because of the revolution, Carlos settled in greater Washington, DC. There, he and Teresita Santaballa (Vignale) were the principals of Deupi & Associates, a highly acclaimed architecture and interior design firm. The practice won numerous awards and was consistently listed in Interior Design Magazine’s Top 100 firms in the country. In the late 1990s, Carlos and Jeannette Merino became a devoted couple, spending the next two and a half decades together travelling the world and visiting friends and family. A published author, accomplished painter, and talented bongo player, Carlos loved travel, fine wine and dining, music, and laughter. Always elegantly turned out, he was quick to recommend the best restaurants in the best cities both at home and abroad. More than anything else, though, he loved his family, who will miss him profoundly. Carlos Deupi is survived by his wife, Jeannette Merino, mother-in-law Victoria Menendez Merino, stepdaughter Lara Marrero, son Victor Deupi, daughter-in-law Jill Deupi, grandchildren Carlos Felipe, Isabella, Anna Sofia, Carolina, and Tristan, and daughter-in-law Jennifer Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents, José “Pepe” Deupi and María Luisa Bengoechea, stepmother Ana Deupi, and older son, Carlos José Deupi.
