In Loving Memory Arthur Lloyd Horsell August 4, 1921 – October 8, 2021 Arthur “Art” Horsell, 100-year old native of Oregon, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2021 at St. Charles Hospital in Bend. His life was marked with many achievements, honors, and memories, but his most cherished were of his family, friends, and community he built through the VFW Post 4108. Born in Alfalfa to William Bartholomew Coleman Horsell and Martha Margreta Anna Mertsching. Art attended the Alfalfa grade school. After his freshman year at Redmond Union High School, his dad became ill and Art went to work on the family farm, beginning his long career as a farmer. With that and the start of World War II, Art was unable to return to finish his schooling. In 2014 at the age of 92 he was honored and proud to be the first to receive his high school diploma as an honorary graduate of Ridgeview High School. Art enlisted in the Navy, February 15, 1942 at the age of 20. He was assigned to the PBV as a Machinist’s mate, also doing aerial photography off the East coast as far down as South America during WWII. His rank was a Petty Officer First Class. When he returned home, he met and married Shirley Mae Will. They bought a ranch in Powell Butte on the Powell Butte Highway in 1949, and raised two children, Dennis and Debbie. Art and Shirley divorced in 1970, and he married Louise Perry on September 1, 1973. After 57 years of raising cattle, alfalfa hay, and other crops, hosting many gatherings on his farm, Art retired from farming at the age of 85 and moved to Redmond with Louise n November, 2006, he sold the house and moved to Brookdale, where he lived until his passing. Art was very active with the VFW Post 4108 in Redmond. He joined the VFW in 1946, and he was thee Quartermaster for 32 years and was a very active part of the community, and a regular at the VFW dances. He left that position for a few years, bur later served as the Quartermaster for an additional 3 more years. From the mid-1960’s through early 1970’s Art was sworn in as a Special Police when the VFW held Teen dances at the hall. He also helped book music acts in the mid-50’s to early 60’s, - including the legendary Johnny Cash. Art was recognized for being an outstanding VFW member in 1996 and was awarded his own honorary parking spot at the VFW. Art’s community service also included acting on the Board of Directors for Central Oregon Irrigation District for 21 years and the Deschutes Farmers Co-Op for 9 years. Art is survived by his daughter Deborah (James) Urell – Powell Butte, OR and six grandchildren, Travis Urell – Powell Butte, OR; Kori (Megan) Urell – Powell Butte, OR; Paul (Corinna) Horsell – Portland, OR; Amy Horsell – Sandy, OR; Kayle (Sam) Fleenor – Spring Hill, KS; and Hannah (Andrew) O’Keefe – Bucyrus, KS. He also had six step-grandchildren Tasha (Sam) Yororzu – Oakland, CA; Kesa (Robert) Yororzu-Miller – Oakland, CA; Starla (Patrick) Breuer – Waterloo, IA; Dena (Andy) Gilchrist – Kennewick, WA; Tracy (Robert) Gard – New York, NY; Jeff (Dana) Gard – San Francisco, CA. Additionally there are 13 great grandchildren Claira, Aidan, Ronan, Delia, Hazel, Savannah, Quynn, Kiplen, Koven, Rigby, Sullivan, Hemingway, Arthur and seven step-great grandchildren Lindsey, Tyree, Tyrrell, Ashley, Leo, Hana, and Mori and many nieces and nephews. He also had a special lady friend Alice Mann at Brookside. Art was preceeded in death by his parents, first wife Shirley (2010), second wife Louise (2013), his son Dennis (1999), step daughters Joyce Yororzu (2010), Karen Morgan (2017), and Jeannie Ewing (2020), and a daughter-in-law Julie Urell (2017). A family graveside service will be held on October 27, 2021 at the Deschutes Memorial Gardens at 10:30 am. A veteran memorial service will follow at 12:00 (noon) at the Redmond VFW.
